Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
So... That was a film, I think.
Not a fan. espite being a pretty huge fan of the first three outings, 4 always worried me, but the trailers looked adequete, all I could ask for. I asked too much. After a slightly bright and breezy start the film just becomes a rather dull, tired, soulless series of action set-pieces, references to the franchise's mythology and focuses on a plot that sees Jack Sparrow hanging around on a ship for no good reason. He doesn't care where he goes, but seems to do not caring where he goes with a lot of effort in umping around, blowing things up and fighting people.
Oh, and the odd Priest Mermaid stuff, if they're only supporting characters, why so many cut-aways? Give them full characters or sideline them completely.
Every actor is wasted, every opportunity is missed, 3D is fine, but it's shot way too dark for a lot of the film, which does allow the CGI to not look as terrible as in previous installments.
Dull, lazy, money-grabbing cack.
2/10

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
North Finchley showed this in screen 4 which is the largest screen so good for this type of screening. There were security at the cinema (er why?). The film started promptly and was about 95% full.
An enjoyable swashbuckling adventure is the best way to describe this. I was definitely entertained and it is a fitting addition to the series - it almost feels like the original charm of Black Pearl but not quite.
The main plotline is weak and is never really explained properly: the use of the word 'prophecy' is casually thrown in but never really justifies the gaping plot holes. It did feel like a series of set pieces played one after the other, and a shopping list of items to collect/places to visit but was a visual treat nonetheless. This franchise once again does come up with innovative ways to choreograph swordfights and escapes.
Johnny Depp delivers his swagger in true Sparrow style and Ian McShane is deliciously evil as Blackbeard ("I'm just a bad man"). Geoffrey Rush is a delight as always (I don't think he ever delivers a mediocre performance). There were some nice cameos from British thespians (Richard Griffiths and Judi Dench). Penelope Cruz was good as Angelica. I heard that she was pregnant when this is filmed which probably explains why the camera is always positioned in such a way that you don't really see her midsection.
I only noticed the 3D when stuff came out the screen so wasn't really necessary here.
Overally I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to a possible fifth installment. 8/10.
I stayed until the very end of the credits, and I'm glad I did as, in POTC fashion, there was a short scene at the end.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
All of us enjoyed this, we all agreed that it was considerably better than the last one, however I do agree with Ethan on the grounds that, it did seem like a movie for the hell of it, theyd picked up on the fact that everyone loves jack, ditched the other expensive actors and made a story(if you can call it that) for the hell of it.
I too didnt understand the significance of the mermaid romance since you never see what happens, it seemed all too pointless unless of course theyll play some part in the supposed 5th installment to which the short scene at the end hinted at.
Not as funny as previous installments I didnt think, and jack seemed to have slightly lost his spaced out quirky style but all in all ill give it a 7/10

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
did Jack put on weight? I kept asking myself this for the entire movie!
I did not have better to do to be fair; the story (?) was boring and annoyingly predictable!
I still don't understand why they do stuff in 3D, th images were all grey and washed up... but that may be due to the cheap 3D glasses! I removed them for quarter of the (very long/way too long) film, and I could see almost everything perfectly and definitely brighter by at least 2-3 shades!!!!
I won't watch it on DVD :)
6/10 for me (I gave 0.5 more than I should because the popcorn+water was a nice touch, even though I had to share with my friend, as 1 of the neighbours knicked one of ours!)

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
Dull, dark and seriously lacking a good plotline. My first film outing for 6 weeks and frankly I wasn't impressed with this at all. Looked at my watch several times during the film but couldn't see what time it was as the ambient light was so low. Willed it to finish and eventually it did in a truly predictable way you could see coming a mile off. What a shocker - please let this be the last one while I still have some fondness left for the first three in the franchise.
It's a very disappointing 4 out of 10 from me.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
Well I for one enjoyed myself. The movie is nowhere near as awesome as Curse of the Black Pearl but a definite step up from the previous two sequels. I really disliked the third movie and assumed this one would be just as rubbish but it wasn't imho. The plot line (or lack thereof) wasn't enough to keep up the story but there were plenty of action packed sequences and funny bits to keep me entertained throughout.
However I do fail to see the relevance of 3D for the better part of the movie. To me it only makes the background look blurry-ish and the focus too oversharpened. For a little while I watched the movie without the glasses and found it far nicer that way (and at least for those 15 glorious minutes 3D glasses didn't push my regular glasses into my face!)
7.5/10
