Used my Odeon vouchers to watch Tree of Life this evening.

Wow, I did not get this film. Very abstract, and painfully slow, but the imagery was beautiful. It was like watching a person's boring travelog without sound, and unfortunately, where there was dialogue, it was lost on me as the accents were very heavy. The beginning was a like a documentary of the history of the universe. It is also very philosophical and spiritual, like what is the meaning of life. As art, it actually is very good. I thought one of the boy actors who plays his second son, looks the spitting image of Brad Pitt, it is uncanning. The cinema at the Camden Odeon was packed, and only two people left when they were showing one of too many scenes of the beginning of the universe, but the rest of the audience were very quiet and attentive and it was only when the credits came up that anyone stirred and then laughter! 5/10

Laughter at the end, thats not a good sign for a film like this anyway.

May be relief it is all over? The film was long.

For me there was a lot to think about and talk over with my companion, who was confused as I was, and she normally gets these things, being much more astute then me, but she did get a lot more than me, as she heard one sentence I missed and which seemed to explain Sean Penn's role, and by understanding that, and
the letter at the beginning which bugged me all the way through, until my friend explained it was a telegram
everything fell into place, and you really can see how clever Malick is. I was both intrigued and fascinated. For that I should have given it more points!

I was really moved by this film - by the grief at the son's death and the desire that we all feel, I think, to be able to meet people we have lost again; and by realising that we are a tiny part of a process of life that has been going on (and will continue to go on without us) for billions of years. Even though I'm an atheist and don't believe in life after death or God I found the film so affecting it's been on my mind ever since I saw it on Friday. The portrayal of the children was so evocative you felt grief yourself for the beautiful boy who died at an early age and for the father who loved his children so much but was unable to make them feel it. I'm going to see it again with a friend tomorrow and I'm recommending it to everyone I know but with the proviso that not everyone will like it. I don't care that some critics etc. have trashed this film I thought it was the best film I have seen or am ever likely to see.

Please use spoiler tags Tarantinoed. I am now going to see this film knowing who dies and I did not want that. I know there is an argument that I should not read threads of films I havent seen but I trust established fmukers such as yourself. But now perhaps from here on, I will listen to that argument and not even read such posts. But then I miss out discussing my anticipations and getting a general concensus of what other established fmukers who have seen it.

Boy am I annoyed now! I just dont whether it is at myself, or you!

Please edit your post. And I'm glad you enjoyed the film.

Don't worry - the son's death is revealed in the first few minutes of the movie. It's hardly a spoiler. ;)

It's not a spoiler. It's the first scene and the whole film is premised on it - it's what the film is about actually e.g. like Inside Man is about a Bank Robbery or Black Swan is about a ballet dancer.

Also, lots of our film discussion threads contain questions from people who have seen the film to others asking for clarification or other interpretations of things in the film such as what did .... mean or what was the significance of something. I thought a major purpose of the film threads was to discuss them after we've seen them - we may not have a lot to discuss before we've seen them. Yes, obvious spoilers should be avoided. Some people are actually confused about the film because they can't work out which son it is and I didn't spoil that! I'd actually like to discuss this point with other fmukers since (like every film) it's open to interpretation but it seems I shouldn't do this in the thread.

LOL!! Speaking of spoilers though, have you guys seen the trailers for "Horrible Bosses" or "Captain America". Christ! I'm not sure I need to watch either of those movies anymore - the trailers give away at least the first 60 minutes of each movie.
