I'm guessing there will be quite a few fmukers seeing this tonight. I caught it last night and I really liked it, but I can see it not being to some peoples tastes.

Re: Rampart
Definitely my kind of movie! Shame I went tonight with just few hours of broken sleep over the last 3 days, I could have enjoyed it more and get more of the plot details!
I was struggling to stay awake and missed some words of the inbred story and as a result wasn't sure who was who at the diner table!
Basically it reminded me of 2 of my favourite movies of last year: Drive and its obscure lead and This Must Be The Place and its remarkable cinematography!
It's funny how one (at least, it's true for me!) pays attention to the cinematography only when it's ridiculously bad or on the contrary borderline gorgeous! I have never pa*d attention to average cinematography (a good 70% of the movies I watch!)...
This was another master class in lighting and shot composition! I would really like to see what the guy can produce in still photography!
My favourite shots were in the club when the screen suddenly turned black with unfocused pieces of pink things (can't remember what it was exactly, it was too short and my brain is failing me right now) and the very simple but gorgeous shot on the beach of the guy facing the massive tanker!
I hated the shot in the DA office, when the camera circled from character to character...
I could tell you more about the cinematography but I feel like I would bore people to death
In summary, I like it and I will see it again! As of now it's a 7.5/10 for me!
edit: by the way, I could not make up my mind, was it shot on film or digital? It looked like a mix of both to me

Re: Rampart
This must be the most uncomfortable screening I have ever been in. Having arrived in good time to be sent to the wrong screening room, meant I did not get the choice of seat that I wanted, but luckily funthing and celini had some spare seats next to them. However, the seats are hard and there is no leg room, I was so cramped and it did not help matters when the guy behind me get kicking my seat or a constant shaking of my seat by his body/leg?? - don't know what he was doing (w**king?) - as when I turned round to glare at him he was literally laying down his whole body and legs stretched out, if you could in such a cramped space! So it was an hour and half of ordeal for me, being kicked and shaken. So, so irritating, and distracting.
Had high hopes for this film, but the film did not seem to go anywhere, and I was left a bit disappointed. It was a slow start, and then seems to fizzle out just as you expect something really gritty to happen. All I could think of was what a horrible character Woody plays and there were so many loopholes and implausible scenes. But thought the supporting actors were very good. Perhaps, I may have enjoyed it more if I did not have such a fidgety person behind me. 6/10
Unfortunately, I wanted to see L.A. Confidential more and did not realise it would be shown after Rampart, thought it was the other way round, anyway, but because I was so uncomfortable, I couldn't sit in that screening room for one more minute, I left after Rampart, and went home to make pancakes instead!

Re: Rampart
I don't think I am able to review this since I fell asleep during the middle act and missed some key parts of the film. I did not fall asleep because the film was boring
but because of extreme tiredness after attending the LOTR all nighter on Sunday.
When I woke up, I wasn't really sure what was going on.
All I can say is that there was a decent story here, and Harrelson was amazing in the lead. I think I would have liked this if I had watched it in its entirety.

Re: Rampart
Hello.
I apologize to the fmukers who attended this screening as my brain took some time to react to pxc's waving hand (I'm slow).
But it was nice puting a name on a face, and a face on a name!
Good points: I must say I was expecting a more racist / violent / hateful character and was a little bit disappointed by that, YET, as a non-cop-film-fan, I really liked Rampart. The cinematography, the characters, the messed up family and professional situations... a few scenes didn't have that many dialogues and it was far better this way, it's rare to have this kind of direction, emphasizing the scene itself, the bodies, the decor, instead of having useless lines. (for instance it would have been perfect right now instead of the sh*t I'm writing)
Bad points: I didn't like a few shots, like the rotating one during a conversation between Buscemi / Weaver / Harrelson (I don't know how to say that in English, sorry). It made me feel sick. And I found the film definitely too long.
7/10

Re: Rampart
I really liked this movie.
I loved the way the camera skulked about in the most obscure places, making it feel like I was eavesdropping on conversations that I shouldn't be privy to, but not making it feel as boring as a documentary.
I felt more shocked by seeing someone smoking in a restaurant than I did of any of the rest of the film content - lol. However, saying that, I did have to wonder at times if the main character had really just said something. Some things being funny in unexpected places, other times it seemed truthfully blunt, which was refreshing, and other times downright shocking. I also liked seeing 'older' actors without plastic faces.
I love Harrelson's acting where sometimes you just don't know when or if he's going to flip.
The ending is left to mull over in your mind. To give an example, the OH said that he didn't like it after watching it (he didn't like the ending), but he said he really liked it the next day. Think the film magic had worked on him overnight.
It's certainly one to watch if you don't like soppy, happy-go-lucky movies where all the loose ends are tied up into a nice little ponytail. Nope, it's a bit like Maggie the mare, where with one fell swoop, it's nicely chopped off, and the loose ends are placed inside your noggin to direct where you think events should go. Everybody will think something different. This is surely the future of filmmaking, especially for a 'thinking' audience.
Just some of my thoughts about it.

Celini,
I definitely agree with you about the beach/industrial scene. It just spoke volumes, and felt like a study in Anthropathology, where our so-called advancement, in technological terms, correlated with the pollution of not only our bodies, but also our minds. Again, it was just something that took you by surprise.
