Re: A Royal Affair
I knew there was a preview of this on Monday AND Thursday at the Cineworld O2 but I completely had not memorised which was which so was as bit surprised when we went up to the superscreen balcony to find it deserted. Oh, it's the Times+ one. Oh, it's in screen 7 and it starts at 6.30pm. Good thing we were there already. We arrived at 6pm to find people dotted all over the foyer who had been told to sit down as they wouldn't be let in before 6.20pm. So OH and I started the queue and were the first in for our favourite seats. I did however end up with the most irritating seat neighbour, a woman who couldn't get comfy in her seat and fidgeted nonstop. She took her shoes off and put her bare feet on the armrest in front of her, then on the back of the seat, then tucked them under her legs, then stretched them out again, then leaned forward for her drink, then... I was ready to smack her after a while.
OH decided to go to sleep at the beginning but I poked him awake and he started to enjoy the movie. It was good seeing it again, and apart from Ms Fidget it was a quiet screening, but I don't think I am coming again on Thursday.

Re: A Royal Affair
Were told we might all have to move along and make room for others as they expected to be full but still plenty of seats dotted around when the film started.
A bit too long at over two hours but an enjoyable film. Times screenings always have older people who don't trail out to the toilet and don't sit with their phones switched on texting which makes a change.
The subtitles were easy to read unlike some when it is almost impossible to read because of the background. Didn't know the Danish history of this so it was all new to me. 7/10

Re: A Royal Affair
Having read nothing about this film or that it was foreign and subtitled, I was pleasantly surprised it was a period drama and a foreign film - two of my favourites! However, the film was a tad too long at 2 hours and 17 minutes, as I went to a very late screening last night at the Mayfair Curzon (thanks to teddybear1), so it seemed a very long night, as we also had 20 minutes of trailers beforehand!
Despite this, I really enjoyed it. The film is brilliant, a classic period drama, great script, wonderful costumes. I thought the actor who portrayed the mentally ill King was brilliant, and I really felt for him, as he was shown to be insecure, could not deal with the responsibility of being a King, and how to behave. The conspiracies were exciting, and the politics were interesting. 8/10

I would have told her not to be so disgusting! Why do people think its ok to put feet up on the seat, in shoes or otherwise?Beate wrote:I knew there was a preview of this on Monday AND Thursday at the Cineworld O2 but I completely had not memorised which was which so was as bit surprised when we went up to the superscreen balcony to find it deserted. Re: A Royal Affair
Brilliant film. well acted. well shot. Well- everything!
Slight disappointment that it was in foreign and with writing on the screen (!) as what with all the Jubilee stuff going on I kinda expected another Queen/Elizabeth/Royal period drama.
As Biggins said it was very easy on the eye and easy to read/follow.
My only bug-bear was (as with most foreign language films) that if you are subject to the flickering eye/micro-sleep syndrome you thyen miss elements of the script which you would otherwise hear in this situation. I found my eyes flicking open again just as a line of dialoge disappeared.
Still - this was a superb period piece.

Why did the King (or Kong?) remind me of Jamie Oliver?!!

Re: A Royal Affair
I enjoyed this but have to concur with what previous posts have said: it is too long. The story really dragged in places and I think it could have easily been slimmed down by about 15/20 minutes without compromising the script. The film was entertaining with a nice blend of drama, political intrigue and romance without being melodramatic. The acting was good and the costumes looked great, which helped make everything authentic. 8/10.

Re: A Royal Affair
It’s a well-made, well-acted The three leads are all terrific, and surprisingly good storyline i normally dont go for this sort of films but i was surprise how good it was , a bit long i think it did drag abit in places to, overall good film.
.
again to prettyxcool for the tickets i enjoyed it.

Re: A Royal Affair
We enjoyed this one too -- loved the cinematography and the general look and feel of the film which felt very authentic.
I love historical drama and am always happy to watch something subtitled and this was very easy to get involved in and to follow. The king was played brilliantly and you really changed your sympathies throughout the film -- he really was taken advantage of from all sides.
I agree it could (and should) have been a little shorter and if anything I would have preferred more focus on the politics and a little less on the romance/personal relationships.
A very interesting and well presented film - 8/10.

Re: A Royal Affair
beautiful film, a glimpse into the world without tech and only a whisp of scientific thought. Europe without roads or even it seems railways, a time full of mannerisms, a world of costume and habits that is pretty much forgotten now, very very old even to the oldest people in the world, perhaps remembered in a story that some 100 year old in a nursing home heard from another 100 year old once, a world almost beyond recall...plus a decent story and set of characters too of course!
Missed the last half hour, Thin Lizzy called. Hopefully I can catch it again.

Re: A Royal Affair
Very much enjoyed the film. Great scenes, well acted. Kept me engaged throughout. Like others, I have no idea about its historical (in)accuracy, but it was certainly entertaining and lacked the corniness period dramas tend to have.
