The Imposter

#1 Post by funthing29 » Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:57 pm

A documentary centered on a young Frenchman who convinces a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who went missing for 3 years.

It is quite an accomplishment when a documentary manages to be both fascinating and gripping.

Disturbing, thrilling, darkly funny and sad all at the same time. The use of interviews, historic footage and re-enactments is masterfully woven together. One of the best documentaries I have ever seen!

Riveting. 9/10

It was nice to meet funthing and celini briefly. havent met any fmukers for so long given my limited preview screening availability!

I was there since 9am for the screeenwriting and film making lectures which I enjoyed. And nope I have no intention in knocking on Spielberg and Nolan's door but its nice to get a feel of the inside workings of film making from the film makers themselves. I might though have a stab at the screenwriting contest just for fun! Oh I pa*d £12 for the day which was very good value for 4 hours of seminars and the movie preview. I know I know, why I p*ying at all, you dummy, I hear you shout...well you know im a sucker by now :)

Anyway, the film. Yes superbly made, very captivating, very manupilative on the audience...yet I HATE IT. I really hate the film, purely in principle. It achieved what it set out to do but I strongly feel it was morally wrong. Yes there was dark humour and the audience was laughing a lot during this film...but I didnt. I was disgusted.

I think the film makers wants the controversy and expect a contrasting reception. They did their job well.

But this film disgusts me. Its exploitation for entertaintment gone too far.

You see its a true story and would have been fine but for the fact they are making a superstar out of a nasty cold calculating criminal. I cannot stomach that. Sorry.

Its hard to rate this because technically it merits an 8/10 but I want to give it zero.

No doubt this might gain quite a success, probably more in the states than over here.

Do you also think all those films based on the true stories of killers are making them out to be superstars too? LOL
I would never associate this person to be a superstar! :P

This film reminds me a bit about the Changeling, not a documentary but based on real life events, it stars Angelina Jolie as a woman
who is reunited with her missing son — only to realize he is an impostor.

Thats not what I mean PXC. Its the way the documentary allowed the real person to make himself a star, and even the documentary film maker admitted in the q&a that he found him charismatic etc. Point is he should never be given a stage in the first place. That is what I detest but I respect all of you seeing the humurous side of it. I am always quite sensitive to horrible people like them being given a stage to promote themselves. Its disgusting to me.

Sorry to dampen the enjoyment though, it may be a personal hatred that I find difficulty in overcoming, so by all means ignore me! I was quite vocal about the vermins during the London Riots and I do find difficulty in following the Christian preach of forgiveness :(

I did not see the humorous side of it. I knew bits of the story as it was on the news a few years back in France,
I just found it was extremely well crafted, and this fascinating story deserved to be told. The guy did his time, he is now a free man, I don;t see much problem with him being interviewed.

I don't see your point about Christian forgiveness though!?

This was my second viewing and it holds up very well.

Here's the review I wrote for it last month: http://londonfilmfanatiq.com/2012/06/22/the-imposter/

I'll transcribe the Q&A from today, but will post it closer to release.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.
