Re: Hope Springs
I thought this was just delightful. A stellar performance from Meryl Streep, and Tommy Lee Jones played his usual grumpy old man routine very well (and he even cracked a smile once or twice!). Did anyone else had to think of the old man from Up at times when watching TLJ?
Even Steve Carrell wasn't half bad in the understated role of the therapist and perhaps, after not completely hating him in this film or other decent ones I've seen him in recently (Crazy, Stupid, Love and Seeking a Friend For the End of the World), I have to reconsider my initial dislike for him.
There were also a fair few laughs from the audience, myself included. I particularly loved the previously mentioned awkward cinema scene and the following exchange between Streep and Carrell:
"Giving or receiving?" "Huh?"
Streep's face in that scene was just brilliant.
In short, this film was sweet and charming and I'd happily watch it again. 8/10

I wonder if it's the same lady who brought her baby to Samsara on Monday at Cineworld Greenwich. She was sitting in the stalls and we were on the balcony yet we could still hear the baby wailing for the duration of the film.Beate wrote:And as for the audience - next time I see a mother bringing a screaming baby to a screening, expecting us all to be the babysitters, I am going to sock her one. Straight where it hurts.

Re: Hope Springs
I was pretty grumpy on missing out on other things last night, but this was pretty damn good in the end. I was very impressed by Jones once he broke out of Agent K mode.

Saw this at Southampton last night. Didn't know what to expect but really enjoyed it. Good acting by both leads and had quite a few funny moments. I actually felt for the characters and found it really moving even though I think if I was a little older (or 20 yrs lol) I would appreciate it more.

Agree with previous comment... Didn't expect anything before going to movie and it is quite good..
It was quite slow I feel, but yes it has it's funny moments and nice story... So I would give 7/10

Re: Hope Springs
I liked this but perhaps not quite so much as the rest of you. It was very much a vehicle for Meryl Streep who I always like -- so I seem to think she can rescue anything she appears in. I didn't like the ending which was far too tidy. I slightly disagree that this will appeal to everyone. I would think that most young people (and I'm not talking about the educated young people we have on FMUK!) would find this far too slow and dare I say it, boring. Still for me it was a change and a change for the better from some of the stuff I have seen recently.
We were in the same tiny screening room at Holloway Odeon that we saw Samsara in the night before. The idiot couple who brought their baby in should have been shouted out by all of us in the cinema but we were all far too polite. I admired the young Odeon worker who told the father to leave but that was after he had already left once and brought the toddler back in, I think. Where was that man's brain???? And all those late arrivals who loitered in the aisle so those of us who arrived on time couldn't see. Of course they all wanted 2 seats together! Just sit anywhere and shut up! And why did they stop to get food when they were already 15 minutes late? I don't get it.

Re: Hope Springs
You do know that they over subscribe so by getting to the cinema at 6:30pm, you run the risk of not getting in?annabrett wrote:I went to Southampton but they wouldn't let me in said it was full.. tried tactics like they only hand out enough tickets for each individual, but she would not be swayed, I said I wasted my journey from portsmouth but no budge, and it was only 6.30pm. Gutted that it wasn't even full. Went to picturehouse in end to use my comp tickets to see Bourne legacy.
