Cheerful Weather For the Wedding

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Thu Jan 10, 2013 12:17 am

Thanks to ritamistry, I went to the Gala Screening at Empire Leicester Square tonight. Was expecting it to be in Screen 1 but it was held in the newly refurbished Screen 2 - big screen and seats on a gradient, so much better. Lovely to see MariaLionza, who I passed, in the same row as me, and then waved to c-t and funthing in the front row, which was very, very close to the screen! Shame, as there were plenty of empty seats behind me and in front of our row. ;)

The film started late, as we had to wait for the intro and some of the actors (Elizabeth McGovern, Felicity Jones, Zoe Tapper, and I think it James Norton(?), and the writers to come to the front. We were told Luke Treadway was stranded somewhere in Jamaica(?) so could not make the screening but his twin brother was there (more of him later!). After the intro, and none of the actors spoke, the guy introducing invited everyone for drinks at the cinema bar after the film, apparently there was a £1,000 tab, which had to be used up! And then after that to the party at All Bar One.

The film felt like it should be a play in a theatre, then you would not have to focus on what the camera is showing you, and your eyes could wander around the stage, to make it a bit more interesting. Also, it frustratingly took a long time to get the story told, after a lot of pouting from Felicity Jones. However, there were a few funny moments. Best bits were the little boy's bombs and the naive little sister, Kitty.

After the film, we followed everyone to the free bar, and after getting our drinks, we went on to the balcony to enjoy it. ritamistry then left after finishing her drink, and I stayed behind for another and mingled with the stars. I spied Harry (Luke's brother and went and chatted to him, as I met him at the You Instead premiere and after party, where he and Luke both attended, and I got them mixed up (they are identical twins!) Whether he remembered me or not, he asked how I was, which was rather nice! ;) Then I spoke to Felicity Jones, thought she was much better in Chalet Girl. But in real life, she is awfully thin! I also spoke to Emil Lager, who had a minor role as the Chauffeur, and was quite pleased that I spotted him. Well ritamistry did o/ I saw Ellie Kendrink (the litte sister in the film) and a few other familiar faces, but it was getting late and I had go.....

Needless to say, I managed to a few photos with the stars. :shifty:\

A very meh film. Bland and forgettable. I was on the verge of falling asleep at one point...

This was unfortunately very forgettable. The film looks pretty and has a stellar cast filled with actors I admire (Felicity Jones, Zoe Tapper and Fenella Woolgar, to name a few), but they all get very little to do in this bland storyline with little purpose to it. It's a real shame, as this could've been very funny (there were a few small laughs here and there) but the film tried to stay too serious and focus on a "love story" that lacked chemistry, depth or a satisfying ending. 5/10

Enjoyed the film as it was beautifully shot - lots of warm lighting for the English summer scenes- and had some amusing moments, but it just lacked something. I wasn't sure if the jokes always worked, and personally I found Luke Treadaway quite weak and that a lot of the scenes relied Felicity Jones pouting a lot in a series of gorgeous outfits. Having said that, if it was on TV on a Sunday afternoon I would happily have it on in the background. It's almost like you get more out of the scenery, costumes, and lighting than the story, which is a real shame. I may have to read the book to see if it was just a poor adaptation..... 6/10

It took a long time to get to the point and I was unsatisfied with the ending too!

It would probably worked better as a made for TV period drama!
