Re: Hitchcock
I liked this a lot (though possibly I was already really happy this wasn't as dull as Hyde Park on Hudson). Helen Mirren was particularly fantastic though Anthony Hopkins was good too.
Wonder how much was fact and how much was fiction though? I haven't even seen Psycho (I'm a BIG scaredy cat) so don't even know how accurate those bits were... Still, I was engrossed from start to finish and liked that the film wasn't just a drama but also included some Hitchock style creepy/wtf moments (and even an occasional laugh).
7.5/10

Yeah I preferred Toby Jones' version too, even though Anthony Hopkins had the better likeness he didn't have the same level of creepy letch about him. And I thought all the scenes with the imaginary character completely pointless. The best bit was Helen Mirren but woud still rather watch The Girl over this and that was on tv!redgrant wrote:Enjoyable, if nothing special. Actually it's probably worth watching Hitchcock and The Girl back-to-back and they look at Psycho and his follow-up The Birds respectively.

Re: Hitchcock
Finally, I film I really enjoyed. This told about a time in Hitchcock's life when he was considered to be in retirement age but instead of doing that he did a quite controversial horror film which first no one wanted to touch with a barge pole. We see how Psycho gets made and his relationship with his wife Alma, but it's also quite clever in that the film has moments of suspense just like a Hitchcock film. I felt really entertained, and time flew by. See, you can make a film in 90 minutes and get it right, you don't need to drag it out!
Lovely screening at Vue Islington as well, quite full but no mobile phones out that I could see or any other major interruptions. Great talking to so many FMUKers too and finally meeting moondance!

Re: Hitchcock
A totally watchable film. I'm sure it had its innaccuracies but I enjoyed it. As a fan of a lot Hitchcock's films I found this film interesting to watch. Seeing his relationship with his wife and how Psycho was made makes me want to find a book about this and see how true the film is. 7/10 from me.
Re: Hitchcock
Saw this this afternoon having returned my morning tix in favour of a lie in. What a pleasant time to go to a preview - 3pm, Sunday afternoon. It just fits in perfectly to the day.
I really liked this film and was not bored at all. I was amazed at Hopkins appearance - and according to Melen Hirren on Graham Norton even she was frequently surprised when he removed his prosthetics to reveal that it was himself underneath. I was also impressed with the actor playing Anthony Perkins - he looked the spit of.
I hadn't realised that Psycho was so difficult to get off the ground and was so nearly "stillborn". Nor did I realise that there was a real story that it was based on. I did find the scenes where Hitch interacted with the original murderer rather distracting and unbelievable. Were they dreams, daydreams, ghosts or hallucinations? He certainly seemed to guzzle alcohol with aplomb!
Enjoyable but would have been happier if it was a little longer and slightly more happened.
I'll give it a 7/10.

Re: Hitchcock
Just home from seeing this at a full shepherds bush.
He film was a little slow to begin with the first hour felt really loooooonnnggg
Best thing about this film was Anthony Hopkins and Helen mirren. Both superb in my eyes
Overall I was little disappointed was expecting so much more ! I love Hitchcock films
Felt like a film that should have been made for tv
But did like the opening and ending where hopkins talked just like Hitchcock did in his tv series.
A disappointing 6/10 from the film
But 9/10 for Hopkins and mirren.

I watched The Girl this morning, so still fresh in my mind, I definitely preferred Helen Mirren as the wife, but Toby as Hitch, maybe I should have watched them the other way around, but I did enjoy both in their own way.elski wrote:Yeah I preferred Toby Jones' version too, even though Anthony Hopkins had the better likeness he didn't have the same level of creepy letch about him. Manchester Lowry quite full today, but still seats at the front, I went with Diane65 and her DD, Steve and my DD. Some of it was lost on my DD I had to explain afterwards, she didnt understand the bird on his shoulder at the end never having seen a Hitchcock film!! I have seen both Psycho a few times and The Birds but not for years. I remember being really scared watching them both, but I was in my teens and films were different then, I think we scared more easily. I did enjoy both Hitchcock and The Girl, though I agree the imiginary character scenes were pointless.

A generalisation, but I get the impression that it seems to be the older members who have rated this more highly.
