I had very low expectations for this not being a fan of Tobey Maguire nor the old version of Leonardo DiCaprio, but was pleasantly surprised by the film. The two male leads had really good chemistry and I relished in the beautiful words of the book as narrated by Maguire. The best part of the film though is undoubtedly how visually stunning it is. The costumes and sets are beautiful and elaborate and the images are crisp and very colourful, showing the abundance of decadence of Gatsby's world. And, surprisingly so, there's a beautiful love story underneath it all as well
(even though it's a one-sided one, as Gatsby clearly loves Daisy much more than she ever has him).
Also, why I normally prefer 2D over 3D films and I was beforehand very sceptical about a non-animated/non-fantasy film being 3D I do regret opting for the 2D version. It was clear from some of the more interestingly filmed scenes that this film would look fantastic in 3D.

8/10

It did. I love more normal films in 3D because I find the picture a lot crisper and think it gives a much better cinema experience. Music was, as always, incredible, but I exact nothing less from Mr. Luhrmann. I think it was cast very well, Joel Edgerton surprised me by playing Tom so well!

One thing though.
It's been a while since I read the book and I kind of forgot the ending, including who actually killed Gatsby. Definitely thought it was Tom. Nice surprise.
I loved the fact that it takes place in the 1920s but there's also contemporary allusions to it, that melded really nicely. Well done.

Well this film was GREAT!

A pony walks into the bar and whispers, "I'll have a beer, please." The barkeeper asks, "Why are you whispering?".
"I'm a little hoarse."

Well, I'm still unsure what my opinion is of this film. I loved the costumes, the music, it was visually impressive but it felt a bit too long. I'm a fan of Baz Luhrmann's work but this fell short for me, however, I'm not a fan of Tobey Maguire so I'm not sure whether that has any influence on my thoughts.

I like both 3D movies and 2D, is it worth watching this in 3D??

I'd say yes, but don't expect to be dodging things or anything like that. Just a nicer picture.

Saw this last night in 3D. Loved the costumes, jewellery, and the music but have to say a bit too long for me. Can't put my finger on it but it just left me a bit disappointed, perhaps I shouldn't have watched the Toby Stephens version just before seeing this version 7/10.

I enjoyed this. It was pretty slow to start and there is a lot of style over substance which pretty much sums up Baz Luhrman films in my opinion, but it improved as it went on and I did enjoy it. Surprisingly I really enjoyed the soundtrack which I'd really been expecting to hate. Joplin meets Jay-Z. I liked!

Not a Tobey Maguire fan though, he's too something or other that I can't quite put my finger on.

Just back from seeing this & slightly underwhelmed. Had expected it to be more Luhman-esque than it was. Quite underplayed by his standards, which is a shame.

Also, it felt quite stage-bound, with the film largely restricted to 3 or 4 studio location sets. I thought it would be a "bigger" film.

On the plus side, I thought Tobey Maguire was excellent & seems to have finally shrugged off child-star image...something that DiCaprio still seems to be struggling with.

As for the use of modern day music, I was fine with this & found it largely unobtrusive.

Overall, 7/10.

I just wish it had been more ambitious (but given that director was making a mini-comeback after the bloated "Australia", this was understandable)
