Any Day Now

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Thu Aug 01, 2013 9:20 pm

Just saw Any Day Now at Soho Screening Rooms courtesy of Peccadillo Pictures. Wow! Was I blown away.

An absolute gem, so well acted by all, Garret Dillahunt, the sensitive lawyer, Isaac Leyva, the Downs Syndrome boy, and Alan Cummings is mesmerising and magic as the drag queen. What a voice, riveting. I loved the sound track. The 70s look and feel was well captured too.

So unpredictable, by the end I was saddened and enraged. Beautiful film, a true story so well told, that everyone should see. Easily the best film of the year for me. 10/10

Thanks jeanelle for keeping me company. It was such a shame that there were only 5 winners, so 10 people in screening room 2 that I think seats 30 people. It made it feel very exclusive though, and we had a nice glass of wine, and, boy, was I glad for the strong air conditioning! o/

As usual prettyxcool sums it all up so well. Seeing this film was a real treat for me and it was a shame that there were empty seats.

The main players were terrific. Garret Dillahunt is wonderful as the dim dad in Raising Hope so it was very interesting seeing him play a completely different part. Alan Cumming has a great voice and was very sympathetic.

PS Take a hanky!

It's been a while since I got so choked up watching a film. This was heart wrenching. Alan Cumming was sensational and the rest of the cast were on top form as well. A definite must see. 9/10.

It was nice to have an introduction from Alan Cumming and the director before it started. I also walked past Stephem Fry on the way out (he is a giant!).

Apparently OH and our friend were sat behind Mr Fry. They're feeling a little star struck. :star:

An incredibly powerful and immensely sad film, with an important message. The amazing performances by Cumming, Dillahunt and Leyva made me cry big fat ugly tears about midway through and I didn't stop until well into the credits. One of the best films I've seen this year. 10/10

No Hiddleston for us at this cinema this time around but did see Alan Cumming and got "stuck" behind Stephen Fry as we were leaving the screening room. Then after I came out of the bathroom he was blocking the staircase because he *had* to Tweet about the film, lol

Even better on a second viewing, brilliant acting and a wonderful (sad) story.

We were able to say thanks to Alan Cumming on our way out and I left prettyxcool lining up for her review to be filmed!

Yes, agree just as good on a second viewing. Still heartbreaking! Went to the after party and saw Stephen Fry there :D
Thank you jeanelle for giving me a chance to see it a second time and meet Alan!

Saw this tonight at the Odeon Covent Garden with a director's Q&A afterwards. The screening room was half empty which is a bloody scandal. We arrived a little late at 6.15pm and all the usual good seats were gone but we discovered that they had added two chairs to the wheelchair row which is even higher than the row next to it so felt like kings sitting there with an unobstructed view. Had to vacate them after the film as the chairs were needed for the Q&A so moved further forward then to get a good view.

Well, I got a lump in my throat halfway through but when the letter was read at the end the floodgates opened and I started crying full pelt. I still haven't recovered. I do think the ending is needed though and felt real. Everyone's performance was mesmerizing, especially Alan Cumming as the drag queen/loving father to a Downs boy and the Downs boy himself. They were full of praise afterwards for him. The director was there with his wife who is co-director and who broke her leg on her first day in London so came to the front in a wheelchair. I went to thank them afterwards and said that they made me cry so much and she was almost apologetic and said she hoped I had laughed a few times as well. Sure, but I am one of those weird people who loves crying in a film, I really do.

It's an important film to make about prejudice, homophobia and plain and simple LOVE. A child should be given unconditional love, it deserves it, so the people who can give it that should be the people caring for it, whether they are gay or straight, white or black, Christian or Muslim.

9.5/10
