The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
I know this isn't out till august(God Dammit)
But how fans are ripping into this article, is actually hilarious. The guy clearly hasn't read the books, heck even the synopsis would tell you it's no Twilight.
I hope that when it does come out Critics aren't this narrow minded and cynical!

Re: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
To be fair, I think what the author of the article is trying to get across is that this could be the next big "Twilight" hype, ie a book adaptation for the same general audience with the same sort of feel to it. Of course the story is not the same (although still with a supernatural tone), but there are certainly similarities in look and feel to appeal to the same rough audience.
Anyway, you enthusiasm for the books have convinced me to finally read them! I've owned the first 3 for ages but the whole plagiarism scandal following the author around didn't exactly make me feel eager to start with them before now.

They are really good :)
I understand what they're trying to get out, its the way they've gone about doing it! The whole article sounds so demeaning, comparing every new YA to Twilight is somewhat of a joke now :/

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Got some very last-minute tickets to see this at the Odeon West End tonight. They weren't joking when they said 6.45 for 7pm. There was a long queue but they left us waiting until that time before they let us in. There were some non-alcoholic drinks in front of the door but the plastic cups were filled so high with ice that I feared spilling it all so I left them alone - to find water bottles and some designer popcorn on our seats. I packed them away straight away as I hate noisy food in a cinema so have only opened and tried them now - which bright spark thinks up "Toffee, Apple and Cinnamon" popcorn? Tastes absolutely foul.
Anyways, after meeting up with rawr_xoxo, valda, caitlinmorton, missgotty and prettyxcool we soon dispersed in the cinem and I came to rue our choice of seats next to the ladies loo (which idiot puts a loo inside a cinema screen anyway?) as there was a constant toing and froing and bright light from the door. Also, my arse got numb quite quickly in those seats and I had to steady myself by putting my feet against the balustrade in front. The film definitely was too long!
I found this to be entertaining though I am not sure I followed the entire story which seems pretty far-fetched. I found the fight scenes a bit samey and some scenes and lines utterly cheesy. The audience rightly laughed at those points. All in all not bad if a tad too long. Jamie Campbell Bower does a good hearthrob impression and I am kind of hooked on his and Clary's story now though I am guessing the books are a bit more comprehensive?
Please don't let him be Clary's brother!
7.5/10
P.S. I am very glad that rawr_xoxo made it in the end and can't wait for her review!

I've been told we're good in that respect.Beate wrote:
Please don't let him be Clary's brother!
I thoroughly enjoyed this, there were definitely some incredibly cheesy moments I could have done without, but I quite liked it. Kind of want to try reading one of the books now. It was cast well, though I do have a hard time believing
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as anyone's dad, though I guess he is getting on a bit
Overall glad I skipped 2 Guns for this, and really glad I got to go, and finally met Beate and OH, as well as rawr_xoxo, and saw valda pxc, and missgotty again.
Really could have done without the girl next to me, who smelt of BO so badly I spent the entire film sniffing my fingers, and was also crinkling her Haribo and crunching her Doritos the whole way through. Some people will never learn, but at least we had a good laugh about it afterward.

OH even demonstrated one of his trademark, faintly embarrassing singing and dancing routines, so you can feel honoured, LOL.caitlinmorton wrote: Overall glad I skipped 2 Guns for this, and really glad I got to go, and finally met Beate and OH, as well as rawr_xoxo, and saw valda pxc, and missgotty again.

I do feel honoured. Lovely to meet you both! I'm sure we'll meet again soon, I think I've seen you about a million times and just never properly met you.Beate wrote: OH even demonstrated one of his trademark, faintly embarrassing singing and dancing routines, so you can feel honoured, LOL.
I think my favourite part of the evening was OH asking what language I was speaking because of my accent! It's a lot more British now than it used to be, but most British people can still tell immediately where I'm from (its the Americans that think I'm British, silly folk), but people's reactions to it when they don't expect it are still really interesting!

Re: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
So I was out all day running errands, and nearly missed this. Got home at 5pm, saw an email from a friend offering a spare! Perfect!
Well, I had no idea what this is all about before I went to see it. However, found it quite crazy, cheesy and corny. Cheesy script, bad acting, crazy story, rather comedic, but I loved it and really enjoyed it. Now I can't wait for the next instalment! 9/10
Lovely to see so many FMUKers, beate, pcrock, jeanelle, valda, caitlinmorton, shmile and there was cocktail, popcorn and a bottle of water. Yay! Sorry to have missed missgoty and rawr_xoxo (glad you made it!)

Re: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
This was pure perfection in my eyes!
As most of you are talking about reading the books, you'll find that all the humorous one liners are direct quotes from the book! Apart from THAT line, even I have to admit that was bad!
I understand for the flow of the film they had to shorten things down or cut it all out but as Beate said, the books are WAY more comprehensive!
EVERYTHING doesn't happen at the institute, it also happens at a place called Renwick's which has the portal, and also at Madame Dorathea's, the institute doesnt have one, and most certainly demons never invade.
You'll be glad to know ofcourse they aren't brother and sister but that shock you can only replicate while reading the book!
Simon also becomes a vampire, if that wasnt obvious enough!
There were only two flaw I had with this and that was Alec had nowhere near enough screen time, youd think as he is out for the count for the latter, they would have given him more in the beginning, though I did love the skulking and constant hounding Clary!
And the fact that Parabatai were never mentioned or hinted to. Jace and Alec are parabatai, warriors who fight together, which is why they're so close and how Alec has affections for him, of course this is deeply explained in the book!
Izzy was perfect and down right bad-ass with that whip! Meyer pulled off Valentine brilliantly,(his lack of bright white hair might prove a problem for the 3rd film!)
Despite the changes from the book, I think it flowed really well, the cast were amazing and perfect for their roles, Rob Sheehan really surprised me as Simon! And the extra scene with Magnus healing Alec was nice to see(not in the book, its mentioned that he helped).
I'm giving this an extremely biased 15/10.
And you all know why :))

Re: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
The corny line - was it to do with angels and "Well, I lied?"
I wikipedia'd all books last night and read a synopsis, and after the second book my head was whirling - after the third book I was brain dead. Not to mention the other two and the sixth that is still to come! There are so many different creatures (angels, demons, vampires, werewolves etc.) with their own set of rules and powers and so many relationships which change during the story, and quite frankly, the storyline seems to get more outlandish with every sentence. This one was quite entertaining but if they try to put all the book content in the next few films I am just going to sit there going "WHAT?" all the time. Looks like I am not a Young Adult anymore...
Glad you enjoyed it, rawr_xoxo though of course 15/10 does not exist... :)
