This thing about the 80s makes sense as there have been changes in attitude since then that didn't seem to be reflected in a current day setting. The person who was extremely annoying was the Mum and her stupid headband.elski wrote: I went to find out the runtime from the imdb page earlier and I spotted on the trivia list that:
The film was originally supposed to take place in 1984, but was moved into the present due to budgetary constraints. Owen's comment about how the water park "hasn't been upgraded since 1983" and Duncan's REO Speedwagon sing-along are both references to this fact.

A nice change to see Steve Carell in the non-comedic role. And Liam James did a fantastic job as Duncan teen roles are always hard in getting the right mix of character so as not be annoying.

Re: The Way Way Back
I perfectly nice wee movie with some very good performances. Liam James was so good at acting the awkward teen that I am tempted to believe that he really wasn't acting at all. Steve Carrel did well in stepping out his comfort zone and playing such a different role from his norm. Sam Rockwell was the most likeable character for me and had some great patter/lines. A movie for anyone and everyone to see, take your granny or your grandaughter, nothing offensive and as far as I can remember, no bad language. The only critisism I have is of the bit of a wishy washy ending. I wanted something more definitive. 6/10.
Re: The Way Way Back
Saw it in Bluewater, it started half an hour later. Sam Rockwell had the best lines!

Hoping my sister will give this a go on her 50th birthday morning - and that if so, she will like it...

Re: The Way Way Back
Thought I would miss this screening tonight, as mum went missing for an hour! Still don't know what happened, as still have not been able to talk to the driver, or the new carer.
Anyway, caught this at the 02, arrived at 6.05pm, but didn't bother to go up to the balcony and had the back two rows all to myself until about 6.40pm, when it started filling up, and by the time the film started, surprisingly on time, it was packed!
I really enjoyed this film. Charming, heartfelt and funny. Liam James, the coming of age boy, and Sam Rockwell, who he befriends, were brilliant. Loved Maya Rudolph from Bridesmaid, and Toni Collete was really good too, as a mother torned between her son and boyfriend. Never liked Steve Carrell, but he was against type and did well playing a hateful, arrogant character, and was not the main star. Actually all the acting was good and with an excellent script, made a simple story very realistic. I liked the naturalness of the water park, no high tech stuff, everyone there just to have a good time. It could have been the 80s, it had that feel. 9/10
I am loving all these good movies lately, no special effects, or gadgets, just really good script and acting.

Re: The Way Way Back
I completely agree. Movies like this and Any Day Now make it worth while going to the cinema, and both weren't on my radar before the free previews so I'm delighted these screenings help me discover such wonderful films.prettyxcool wrote:I am loving all these good movies lately, no special effects, or gadgets, just really good script and acting.

Re: The Way Way Back
I just got an email with two The Way Way Back codes from SFF, making it sound like they were new, which must've confused the OP
