Its not even fiction, I don't think it even counts as fantasy. At least fantasy is internally consistent, this just made up the rules as it went along. The only accurate part were the views of Earth, they were magnificent. The tropical storm especially so.

I could list all the problems but would involve a lot of text in spoiler tags.
I will however say this much, space is big, very very big, and any exploding satellites will spread out over an enormous volume - especially in orbit. The highest concentration of debris will be in the same orbit as the original satellite and will settle into a ring. In order to threaten other satellites with the level of destruction shown, the first satellite had to be made of around 1,000 missiles each with an individual target in massively different orbits, which were then triggered on their paths by the first missile.
Nothing less could explain why so many satellites were destroyed.

The actual threat from debris in orbit is from something like a flake of paint (the bigger stuff is tracked by radar from the ground) hitting a satellite and ruining the electronics. The satellite is effectively wrecked but remains a single piece in an unchanged orbit.
The propellant used in satellites is a stable substance as you don't want it to blow up at an inconvenient moment. Even if both tanks (propellant and oxidiser) were punctured together, you would only have outgassing effects into vacuum.

In order to wreck another satellite by exploding it would require a massive impact, something like a cannon ball would be needed to do that. Something small would just punch a hole, you need a large surface area to impact as much momentum as possible to create an explosion. Even then what happens depends largely on where you hit and with what.

Put simply, either the world was about to go to war or those events couldn't happen.
I think you're missing the forest for the trees.

One of the few films that I would say should be enjoyed in 3D. As I don't have a physics degree, I really enjoyed the spectacle.

I thought it was absolutely amazing! Exciting and tense.

Sandra Bullock should win an award for this. She was excellent, and all that floating around must be incredibly difficult to do. George Clooney (*swoons*) can do no wrong, can listen to him all day! My only gripe is the music seems a tad too loud for such a small screening room as Screen 1 at West India Quay Cineworld. So when the sound stopped, the silence was deafening (excuse the pun!), so I get it, what they were trying to achieve, no sound in space! I am sure my ears popped too!

Lovely to catch up with Beate and tsoiboy, seems a long time ago since we last met.

Very entertaining. I'm not much of a 3D fan, but I thought it worked brilliantly.

So that's what it feels like to hold one's breath for 90 minutes.
What a spectacularly TERRIFYING movie! STUNNING in every sense of the word.
It's a 10/10 for sure and anything less is just nitpicking.

However, it has to be said that when I first saw the trailer at the BFI IMAX, I found the 3D to be nothing short of breathtaking.
That preceding 2.5 minutes was miles better than the actual main feature (Pacific Rim).
Tonight however, I only really noticed an extra bit of depth during the
scenes on Earth.
This is surely the fault of The O2 yet again. The picture was flat almost throughout.

Saw this in a full Braehead cinema. None of my usual FMUKer buddies there as most already seen it. Film was shown in the Imax screen which certainly added to the opening shots.
I found this film to be totally gripping although i did shut my eyes at some of the rotating scenes. I would not have thought it possible to make a film with only 1 real character on screen. A great performance from Sandra Bullock! George played himself!

I was running late from work so had to sit in the downstairs bit at the O2 near the screen - it was ok. I expected the 3D to be crap, given I was too near and off centre, but the picture was tolerable. o/

8/10, best thing I've seen Sandra Bullock do in a while.

I loved this film. I normally find 3D distracting but I thought it definitely enhanced the brilliant visual effects.

I saw this last night in norwich, 3D IMAX. Totally amazing, despite from the idiot sat next to me on his phone! Couldn't even move seats as the cinema was full!

Easily best film I've seen this year, I've read a few comments saying 2d would do the film justice - for those of you saying that please go and see it in IMAX - the effect from it is incredible, I actually felt like I was in space!

Highly recommended 10/10.
