Re: The Railway Man
Saw this this morning in Glasgow with OH, karenlg123 and her Dad.
I have to agree with previous comments, I thought this was excellent - an emotional film, told well and fab acting. A lot of times I forgot it was based on a true story and couldn't quite believe that some of the things actually happened. Would def recommend.
8.5/10 from me.

Re: The Railway Man
Yes loved this film. Wester Hailes full and some folks turned away.
Not a rustle, not a sound, always the sign of a great film.
So nice to see the other Edinburgh fmukers, Tiz you need to give us a clue, what you look like or arrange to say hello next time.
I thought Jeremy Irvine was very convincing as the young Lomax, and a good choice to go with Colin Firth. Good film of a terrible period in time.
Hubby not able to come today,so will not mind going to see it with him tomorrow night.
If anyone has tickets and is debating going, do go and watch it.

Re: The Railway Man
As with Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, I seem to be going against the grain once again - I did not think this was anything special.
It is meant to be an emotional journey but I did not find myself engaging with the characters or the story. Firth is excellent and the rest of the cast do well but the script does not provide the emotional punch that the material deserves. Beautiful scenery and strong performances but lacklustre script and direction.
7/10.

I really enjoyed the film and it exceeded my expectations as I had not watched any trailers. Acting and cast are very good and I must say I was moved by the film overall - expecting the same with Mandela. 8.5/10. Defo one of the best films I've seen this year.

Re: The Railway Man
You could here a pin drop in the cinema. The rustling of sweets etc. receded within minutes of it starting. Such good acting by all the cast. Such a moving story.
I knew that a friend of mine had her dad on such a railway and the trauma never left him.

OH did have to spoil it though by asking if Colin Firth only did people with problems????? Did put him right with a description of Mr Darcy....

Re: The Railway Man
Went back to see this tonight at Fountain Park as hubby wanted to see it. Holy moly. 3 mins past six and a queue the length of Leith Walk (an Edinburgh saying). The folks at the front ot the queue had been put in the bar area and then when the screen was opened they all went in. we had to wait till they counted the seats (remember arrived at 3 mins past 6) lots of people who arrived behind us would not get in.
My ticket said 6 for 6.30 so don't know why so many folks were there early unless of course they knew it was a good film and wanted to make sure of a seat?
Stuartboy, you were the last one in the cinema, don't know if someone had kept you a seat or if you were just lucky. not in my usual seat at all, (did not like it at all) but glad to get in!!
hubby enjoyed film, tho and said he was glad we got in.
Just as good second time round, but hope other fmukers were lucky at their screenings and got in

Re: The Railway Man
As usual, we were the first ones in and bagged our favourite seats.
This was quite harrowing and it might have been too much for one old geezer who had to leave in the middle of the film - during a quiet, non-harrowing bit funnily enough. It caused quite a ruckus as the whole row got up and two people stood in front of us blocking our view. Then one bloke, clearly thinking he was in a film, uttered the heroic words: "IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? THIS MAN NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION!" They got him out but not before the house lights came on briefly and I lost a full 5 minutes of dialogue. He was ok later - I saw him sitting outside on a bench with the wife when I accompanied OH to the loo.
Anyhow, apart from that and a few phone lights now and then it was a quiet screening - you couldn't help but be moved by this story of forgiveness. I remembered after a while that I had actually read about this story somewhere before so wasn't surprised by the ending, but moved nevertheless.

Back from Glasgow. Sat with OH and McG. OH and McG "enjoyed" it if that is the word to describe this. However I am not so sure. It isn't bad but it's not great. 6/10

Re: The Railway Man
Went yesterday to the Wester Hailes viewing. Cinema full to capacity.
A very moving account of what was a very harrowing experience for so many. All the actors were very good in their respective roles although I did think considering that the modern period of the film was set about 40 years after the actual events that Colin Firth could have done with looking more the age that Lomax would have been at that time which I assume would have been at least 60. Both him and Nicole Kidman looked quite young.
I was actually in Kanchanaburi in April this year and stood on the Bridge over the River Kwai (Not the original). Also visited the museum and war cemetery and that had been very moving at the time.
Would recommend this film.
