Best movie of the year so far. Knocked 12 years right out the ball park. MM completely unrecognisable but brilliant. JL was excellent as support. Watching this brought back lots of reminders about how different peoples attitudes were back then to the whole subject of HIV and AIDS. Surprisingly a few laugh out louds.
Loved seeing the brick sized mobile phone and hearing the Marc Bolan songs in the background. If you don't see this movie you will be missing out.

Excellent film with a couple of brilliant main performances. I was puzzled that Tom Hanks hadn't been nominated for an Oscar, but this just shows how high the standard has been this year.

An amazing story I knew nothing about, some genuinely tender moments and quite a few lighter moments as well.

Very good, glad McConaughey is using his charm for good after years of (literally) leaning on his co stars! 8.5/10

8/10 No failure to launch here with some great acting from McConnaughey and Leto. The FDA are a depressing bunch.

I think I've got the reputation of "sorting out those with bad cinema habits"! If you are going to misbehave in Glasgow cinemas, do not sit near me . . .no texting, no talking, no loud munching, etc.
Re the film, I really enjoyed it and like Yinster says there were some memories of "Philadelphia" and Tom Hanks performance.
Matthew McC was awful looking in many scenes . . in fact, he did look as though he could really have Aids! Jared Leto was excellent in his role and deserves a best supporting actor award. His character also allowed M McC to show his changing attitude as well as some humour.
I think if you are of a certain age and do remember the attitudes and fears of AIDS in the 1980s then you will definitely appreciate the film.
I loved 12 Years a Slave but think M McM rightly deserved his Best Actor Golden Globe.

Now, I usually aren't a fan of Matthew McConaughey. But that was something else. What a performance in a pretty darn good film, both from him and Jared Leto who was amusing and heartbreaking at the same time. Would have wished for a bigger victory over the FDA but you can't rewrite history.

Lovely to see so many FMUKers tonight at Odeon Greenwich, including bevvy, PXC, ZoeBanfield and jojojoanne.

I echo Beate! Not a fan of MM but what a performance from him. A heavy subject but told extremely well. Well worth making the trek to the other side of the world for me! Great to catch up with so many FMUKers, Beate, bevvy, ZoeBanfield, rawsalsa and meet jojojoanne!

Saw this tonight in a completely packed Wimbledon. Matthew McConaughey is compelling as the AIDS-stricken cowboy (Ron Woodroof) who took on the FDA to improve the lives of other AIDS sufferers. Jared Leto was equally captivating as his cross-dressing room mate, Rayon. Both roles were easily the pinnacle of their careers (so far, anyway).

The film pointed out the anomalies and inflexibilities within the FDA’s drugs trials system, whereby the drugs trials last over a year – yet the people on them (i.e. with full-blown AIDS) were more than likely to be dead in a couple of months. Ron Woodroof was the reluctant hero who, through dogged perseverance (including trips all over the world) enabled AIDS sufferers to get the drugs they needed whether or not they had been approved.

Loved the eighties touches – massive mobiles, T-Rex, droopy moustaches etc. It was very touching to watch Ron Woodroof’s character and preconceptions change as his relationship with Rayon developed.

A moving and eye-opening film. 9/10

Really enjoyed the Dallas Buyers Club film last night at Greenwich Odeon. 8/10. I seem too keep missing out on meeting up with prettycool and beate and others. I arrived around 6.15pm with hubby. It was quite full so We sat at end of aisle too left I think We were 4 rows from front. We need too wear badges or something so We can spot each other. I can be quite shy at first I don't like too randomly start chatting but once I start I cant stop lol.

I saw this last night at Greenwich Odeon. I thought it was a very good film, made really well.

It was nice to see Beate and OH, who I haven't seen for a while. I finally met prettyxcool! And ZoeBanfield, who I've seen a couple of times at previews - we've even chatted on one occasion!!

I had my doubts about this one prior to screening, given the dour nature of the content. But I enjoyed the film on many levels; the excellence of the acting being the main plus. As befits Oscar nominations, McConaughtey and Leto were both superb. At the heart of the film is an arresting moral ambivalence; how capitalism puts profit ahead of all else, yet how easy it is to slip into the capitalist mode of making a quick buck. The revelation of HIV/AIDS infection comes very early in the plotting; too early for me, as I would have liked more time to get to know him in order to empathise. The pace slackens towards the final quarter; a touch of judicious editing would have helped. Overall, not sure it fully deserves its Oscar nomination for Best Picture; but well worth seeing.

I liked it, but didn't love it. McConaughey and Leto are gobsmackingly great, but they totally carry the rest of the film. The expository scenes in the hospital between the doctors were very clunky, and I didn't think Jennifer Garner was that great. Still, well worth the long trek to the Greenwich Odeon!
