Re: Labor Day
It was ridiculous but I actually enjoyed this film. I must be an old romantic at heart.

Re: Labor Day
I am officially losing the plot.
We rocked up nice and early at the cinema, smiled beatifically while presenting the usher with our printout, then watched him study it intently, finally looking up and saying: "Erm, this is the wrong cinema, love. You need to go to Leicester Square." Only then I realised my mistake - we were at the Vue Islington instead of West End! It took us another half hour to race across London but due to our fabulous friends PXC and ejwrank we still got some of the best seats in the house. They wouldn't have had any trouble filling our seats if we hadn't turned up as it was actually oversubscribed, with the first minutes of the film marred by latecomers looking for seats, some of them settling down on the stairs.
I think I liked the film even more at second viewing. I certainly cried harder, and I noticed things more, like that Henry never forgot anything that Frank taught him that weekend and later did successfully, whether it was baseball, changing a tyre or baking.
After the film they rounded up people for radio interviews which they had announced before. I had the review all planned out in my head. I had planned to wax lyrical about this simple story of two people, both prisoners of some sort, trying to break free and be happy, and then all he wanted was for me to summarise the film in three words! I did however manage to get stuartboy's quote of "a peach of a movie" in and simpered about the peach pie scene - I am such a sucker sometimes. I want my own Frank Chambers - without the murder charge though.
9/10

I really didn't like this at all. huge holes in the plot, dreadful dialogue, loads of flashbacks going on. And the worst imho most cringeworthy scene since Ghost.
I wanted to leave after 20 minutes, but thought it may get better. I reckon the book would be more to my liking 2/10

Re: Labor Day
Did the positive reviewers of this movie find Josh Brolin charismatic? There's a line that suggests he's supposed to be and it would make the plot make a lot more sense but there's no spark there at all?

Re: Labor Day
He cooks. He bakes. He does things round the house. He mops the floor for God's sake. He pays women's compliments. He dances. He's patient with kids. He's a good teacher. He looks fab with a beard. He growls. Apart from that tiny little inconvenience with the murder charge he's the ideal man. Of course there was a spark.
Re: Labor Day
Oh, I get it now. This movie was a Frankenstein reboot wasn't it?

Re: Labor Day
I got to Vue West End really early by accident, and was told to wait in the bar upstair and will be called down when the organisers arrived at 6pm. However, I got half way and decide no, not going to do that and when I came back down, a huge queue had already started, and I joined the end with the lovely ejwrank and mandmc10. Later found out bevvy was waiting in the bar too, she was not too pleased either, as she was not told everyone was going in. Lovely to see elski there too, what a good turnout of FMUKers!
What a beautiful story, moving, touching, tense and sad. I had tears in my eyes at the end. Much slower than I expected. So well acted and well cast, Kate Winslet the tired single mother who has given up living and relies heavily on her teenager son, Gattlin Griffith, who sees everything but is helpless, and Josh Brolin, so tough, yet sensitive, as the escaped convict. 8/10
I tried to get interviewed, and waited besides Beate, but the interviewer totally ignored me! Finally, after letting three people go in front of me, he turned to me and was totally uninterested in what I had to say. I managed to get a free book though, after arguing with the lady that I did complete the form and I was interviewed, as she did not believe me!
And also why were her letters returned unopened and she was not allowed to visit him? Just did not seem real
I had to suspend belief! He is too perfect!Beate wrote:He cooks. He bakes. He does things round the house. He mops the floor for God's sake. He pays women's compliments. He dances. He's patient with kids. He's a good teacher. He looks fab with a beard.

I don't think you were the only one! My friends rang me to asked me too where the screening was ! Thanks ejwrank for being there to help with saving seats, as my OH was running late and so were my friends! At one point when they had actually arrived and disappeared to the ladies, one guy asked if the person had actually arrived yet for the seat we were saving! He was ready to sit down.Beate wrote:I am officially losing the plot.
