What We Did On Our Holiday
What We Did On Our Holiday
Outnumbered meets Monarch of the Glen!
Very enjoyable and stunning scenery, much in the vein of Monarch or Hamish Macbeth.
kids were cute and funny, if a little contrived and over-edited. Not quite as spontaneous and improvised as Outnumbered kids were even at an early age.
I found this rather hard and poignant to watch as The Big Yin was playing a character who was dying of cancer, and I found this a little close to real life for my liking - having met the great man himself last month. Thankfully he is doing well health-wise. Having said that, the whole issue of Gordie being ill and dying becomes so prepostorous that it becomes simply funny and not at all morbid after all.
I do think that this would have made a several part TV adaptation for Sunday evening far better than a feature film. Many of the characters could have been embellished upon. I did however think that they were stretching what they had quite a bit as it was. Perhaps a bit more scripting and writing was called for.
Not quite sure why Ben Millar was playing a Scottish person though either. Are there no other Scottish actors that could have been the brother?
Yes it was funny, but perhaps not as funny as The Times crowd felt it was.
Everybody swears like that in London! Lol.

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
I wasn't sure what to expect as British comedies can be a bit mixed, but the Outnumbered guys certainly know what they're doing.
It started slow, with a couple of laughs, but felt just like an average episode of Outnumbered. But then it slowly improved, got more emotional, there were more laughs and there's a genuinely out there central idea in the second half.
By the end I had a big grin on my face and a small something in my eye. V good 8/10

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
Typical, been trying to post for ages, always thrown out. Let's see how far I get this time.
Well, what a surprise. I saw the trailer before the Picturehouse preview on Sunday and didn't think much of it. But it has Billy Connolly in it so off we went.
He was excellent, but the real revelations were the kids. Total naturals they were. Very likeable and funny characters - I don't know whether they had a script or could just say what they came up with but they were very believable, and showed up all the adults.
The landscape was utterly gorgeous of course - Scotland, please don't leave us!
The film is very very funny but you could be chuckling away one minute then feel moved the next. The relationship between granddad and grandkids was lovely and as for them fulfilling his last wish - what can I say. I flinched at the "At least you dodged Alzheimer's" line.

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
Back from Glasgow. Unfortunately I didn't like the film. It felt from the start to be seen on tv and not on the big screen. Having never seen Outnumbered I didn't know what to expect. OH thought it was funny. Me not so much. A few chuckles but what's so funny about some children doing what they did? Billy Connolly was Billy Connolly on screen. And is there no other Scottish actors to play the other brother? 5/10

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
Also saw this in a packed Glasgow screening. I absolutely loved this film!
The kids were great and, although they were probably a year or 2 older than their characters, portrayed the variety of kids in most families. I lived each of them and definitely recognised my own children at different stages. The interaction with Grandpa(Billy Connolly) seemed very natural as it was with their parents. Story was fairly simple but the complexities of family relationships was handled very well.
I would have happily pa*d to see this and may even try to see it again!
Marks 9/10
ps Beate was spot on about the scenery!
pps I'd love to see a follow up of this with the children returning to school and telling what they did do on their holidays!

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
Full house in Edinburgh. Loved the film and have never watched Outnumbered but the kids were very believable in this. Found out that the beach was Red Point Beach in Wester Ross. Never been there but I am sure it will have people flocking there now looking for the remains of the Viking raft!!!
A lot of laughs but the best one must be when the little boy says he can't wait to go back to school and the teacher asks them to write about what they did on their holiday!! 9/10

I love Outnumbered and this was just as funny. Really enjoyed this as a bit if light relief after a busy day in the office. It would work equally as well as. 2parter on TV.
Good fun.

Re: What We Did On Our Holiday
This started off OK but quickly descended into ridiculous nonsense. I was rolling my eyes and cringing as it became more and more ludicrous. It was not funny or intelligent enough to be considered a farce therefore it is just a so-so comedy IMO. 6/10.

I really enjoyed this. The Scottish scenery was stunning and the kids were absolute treasures - incredibly natural and funny.
A gentle comedy that had me laughing out loud at times as well as tearful.
Solid 8/10
