Re: What We Do In The Shadows
I was hoping to see this in the future but now I'm not sure that it will be worth time out from my otherwise busy life! It certainly sounds as though it's a Marmite film . . .and I don't like that!

Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston
Films already booked for:

Original, clever, humorous and very quotable...."We're werewolves not swearwolves"!!
A Spinal Tap of the vampire genre! And definitely needs a second viewing for the subtleties missed first time around!
Can I just say that this is a fantastic site, filled with lots of great, generous people.........who's cinematic taste is mostly the opposite of mine! But I wouldn't disrespect them by dissecting their review just cos it doesn't fit with my taste!
That's the good thing about this site, you can give your opinion of a film without others who have a different opinion having a go at you, normally.
No one should be frightened to give their opinion for fear of being ridiculed or put down, our tastes aren't all the same.

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
I always go with an open mind and I did giggle at the first 15 minutes or so and thought it was very novel, but then the originality turned to tedium as it was very repetitive and I just got bored and, unfortunately, I kept falling asleep. I did try hard to stay awake, but the droning narration just kept sending me off! I normally like small independent films a lot more, but on this occasion I did not. However, I spoke to a friend later, and he had enjoyed it and thought it was very funny. So it seems to me to be a very marmite film. 1/10

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
This was not what I was expecting at all but it did make me laugh! It was a mockumentry and the sheer absurdness made me giggle. It wouldnt appeal to all but I like something different now and again!

I do confess to laughing a couple of times during the first 15 minutes but it was not my cup of tea. Only managed 30 minutes before leaving 1/10

For anyone old enough to remember - this is old school Python and Spike Milligan with touches of Mel Brooks thrown in.
I loved it.

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
Saw this at the pop-up cinema event at Asylum in Peckham last night. In a dilapidated former chapel in the grounds of what used to be almshouses for retired pub landords (asylum in the sense of a place of refuge rather than a madhouse). It was quite a fitting venue for the film given the run down nature of the flat that the vampires share.
Though these kinds of event generally make me anxious. Due to the nature of the seating the chances of someone sitting in front of you and blocking the screen are quite high and I moved a couple of times. The long wait for the film to start didn't help. A proposed 7pm start become almost 7.30. The fact I'd got there at 6 meant I was already getting annoyed. Then when things finally kicked off, we had to sit through a short film and my chances of getting the required train to get home at a reasonable time home vanished out of the stained-glass windows.
Thankfully the film itself was well worth the effort. I thought this was perfect. Incredibly funny and a treat for fans of all kinds of vampire cinema. Any worry that the joke wouldn't be sustained were unfounded and I thought this was consistently funny throughout. From the more obvious visual gags to the more understated ones, I found it hilarious. The references to other vampire films from The Lost Boys to Twilight was spot on. The performances were great with both co-directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi excellent as two of the vampires. A wonderful brief cameo too from Clement's fellow Flight of the Conchords co-star Rhys Darby as one of the werewolves.
Hard to pick out highlights for me as I loved all of it but 'BAT FIGHT!' was hilarious, as was the Lost Boys inspired party trick of turning spaghetti into worms to scare unsuspecting victims ("It doesn't work on chips"). I also particularly liked the policeman, who, on finding a body mauled by werewolves, blames it on an innocent unthreatening pet dog. Leading it over to the body, pointing at it and declaring 'Look what you did' as if he was just telling it off for fouling the carpet or chewing up a slipper.
Definitely one of my favourite comedies of the year.
Though I'm still not entirely sold on pop-up cinema events, the setting was perfect and the film was great, so I'm glad I made the effort to go.

Brilliant, add in a dash of Conchords and Anchorman for the rivalry with the (S)wearwolves and you end up with one of the funniest films in ages.Tiz wrote:For anyone old enough to remember - this is old school Python and Spike Milligan with touches of Mel Brooks thrown in.

The mockumentary format is a bit tired and I was a bit worried by a slow start, but it just got better and better and we were all laughing out loud in Manchester (apart from the couple of walk outs who weren't with us)
Lots of great little details, looking forward to seeing it again 8.5/10

Re: What We Do In The Shadows
Saw this tonight. Liked what I saw, but like others I kept falling asleep. Reading the credits at the end and seeing how many characters I had no recollection of tells me how much I must have missed. It did seem a bit repetititititive, but it was funny. There can only have been about 15 people watching so this didn't help the atmosphere, but there was definitely laughter. I particularly liked the SFX - surprisingly good for a low budget indie film, and I was amazed at the appearance of Petyr - his first scenes were actually quite scary!
I need to see this again to properly comment.
7/10 so far.

Just can't forget the scene where he prepares a new victim for a 'bite' by laying out newspapers around her and then hits the jugular by mistake. An absolute hoot.
