Birdman

A washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory.

Saw this tonight and it's dazzling filmmaking, looking behind the scenes of a theatre production and the ego and neurosis of the actors with cutting edge technical wizardry, like Bullets over Broadway made by the Gravity team.

I'm still unsure how successful it was, I was constantly thinking how did they do that and how is this still one single shot, which was a bit distracting, unlike something like Gravity or even Rope where the one shot or extended take gimmick drew you in and helped immerse you in the film.

It's full to bursting with ideas, great acting and brilliant shots/moments, I'm hoping there's another screening before it's released next year, as I'd love to see it again.

I thought Birdman was powerfully excellent. Loved the single-take style and the swooping adventurous camera.

So pleased I plumped for this over Faces of Live.

And there's me, the loser who just, did. not. get. it.
Loved the continuous shots though, every time the screen almost faded to black is where they cut the shots I reckon :)

I thought the acting was very good and some parts of the film were very funny however I'm not sure I liked the film overall.

The drummer did get a bit on my nerves after a while.

Saw this yesterday at the 20th Century Fox screening room, thanks to ritamistry. A full screening, and we were given drinks and popcorn (salty unfortunately, so gave them to ritamistry!). Lovely to see valda and jeanelle there too.

Well, unfortunately, I do not know how this has been nominated for 7 awards or whatever, I read somewhere. I was quite bored, and the drumming just gave me a headache. But I did like Emma Stone and Andrea Riseborough, they were very good. 5/10

Saw this last night at a Picturehouse preview.
Mixed from me, some of it I thought was genius and was totally immersed, other bits I just thought were totally pretentious and I hated it, so a real Zmarmite one for me, swinging back and forward between like and hate throughout the film. Reminded me too much of Synedoche in parts but possibly that was the theatre setting. I suspect it's a view it more than once film for me before I get it all. I did mind the drum score initially but I'd have quite happily shoved his sticks up his nose by the end!
Marmite....

Saw this with vealster at Haymarket and I loved it! I don't particularly like M. Keaton so wasn't that keen on seeing this but he was actually pretty good, plus E. Norton was brilliant as usual. It was funny and kept my attention throughout, although I do think they borrowed heavily from early Spike Lee films in terms of style, music, continuous/long shots, dialogue etc.

10/10

Not quite sure what to say. I either hated this with a passion. Or loved it. It is extremely well done, well acted, well filmed and captivating. That said it does feel like 48 long hours in the company of a washed out has been actor. The continuous flowing filming is exemplary and seems very original. It is a shame that so much of the oddities are in the trailer though.

This feels so much longer than the 2 hours that it is. I also think it is very much a watch it once sort of film. I was also getting very bored of the constant percussion soundtrack banging away throughout, although this was sometimes seen as a man and a drumkit bashing away in a corridor or corner of a room.

Ok. Marks out of 10? This is either 1/10 or 10/10. Jury is still out so I'm plumping for a 6/10.
