It's Kind of a Funny Story

Loved it, loved it. I saw this tonight at the London FIlm Festival, I thought it was a very considered drama peppered with lots of lighthearted moments and performances that just clicked, mainly from Keir Gilchrist and Zach Galifianakis(doesn't he looked like John Goodman). Even the supporting cast was wonderful and the film just oozed charm. Ryan Fleck, one of the directors was at the performance and I must say he's one of those directors you need to look out for (also directed Half Nelson). Watching the film was just like a breath of fresh air and often quite funny.
However it might not be to everyone's taste, my friend was very bored next to me and thought it dragged, so even though I wanted to stay for the Q&A, I left to keep my friend happy.... I was actually quite disappointed at the large numbers of people leaving....
I really liked this film and it's life affirming message, yes just go LIVE....

What's a 16 year old boy doing playing music and table tennis with adult psychiatric patients - on a school day? It's kind of a funny story... "It's Kind of a Funny Story," adapted from Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel of the same name, is the new comedy-drama from acclaimed writer/directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. It's at 5:00 AM on a Sunday in Brooklyn. Craig Gilner (played by Keir Gilchrist of "United States of Tara") is bicycling up to the entrance of a mental health clinic; this bright 16-year-old is stressed out from the demands of being a teenager. Before his parents (Lauren Graham [of "Parenthood"] and Jim Gaffigan [of "Away We Go"]) and younger sister are even awake, Craig checks himself into Argenon Hospital and is admitted by a psychiatrist. But the youth ward is temporarily closed - so he finds himself stuck in the adult ward. One of the patients, Bobby (Zach Galifianakis of "The Hangover"), soon becomes both Craig's mentor and protege. Craig is also quickly drawn to another 16-year-old displaced to the adult ward, the sensitive Noelle (Emma Roberts of the upcoming "Scream 4'), who just might make him forget his longtime unrequited crush Nia (Zoe Kravitz of the upcoming "Mad Max"). With a minimum five days' stay imposed on him by the adult ward's staff psychiatrist Dr. Eden Minerva (Academy Award nominee Viola Davis), Craig is sustained by friendships on both the inside and the outside as he learns more about life, love, and the pressures of growing up.

It's kind of a really really bad movie. If it were actually released this year it may have ended on the bottom 10 like other LFF films. Not funny, not interesting, painfully stupid and boring.

7.3 on IMDB seems respectable to me - I'd give it a go on that basis and the subject matter. But it's not out here until early March.

Saw this one yesterday and I rather enjoyed it. It told a good story and had some really good humour, though it wasn't as funny as I hoped it would be. That said, I felt that the amount of humour matched the tone of the film. As much as I enjoyed "Under Pressure" (and I really, really did) it was a bit out of left field. If anything they should have done more fantasy type sequences like that. This is definitely something I think a lot of the teens today could benefit from viewing. I'd go 7.5/10

This was my favourite amongst all the films I saw yesterday. Despite the damning reviews that some fellow FMUKers have posted, I thought the film was absolutely fantastic. So much so, I would have no hesitation in going to see it again tomorrow.

It's a sublime mix of the funny, sad, moving and romantic. Most of all though it's a real feel good, get out there and grab life by the throat, you can do anything you want to, life affirming, sort of a film. Terrific performances from Keir Gilchrist (I'd never seen him in anything before), Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis.

All in all a great film, but worthy of a viewing solely for the "Under Pressure" musical sequence performed by the inmates of North 3.

Please don't be put off by what some others have said on here. Give the film a chance, go and see it and make up your own mind.
