Re: The Look of Love
Lovely to see Livi92, shmile, tsoiboy, ejwrank and David at Islington Vue.
What a disappointment, it was dull and boring, until the very end, when it was rather sad and poignant. I nodded off a few times but did not seemed to have missed anything. Not a lot happened except a lot of debauchery. It was only saved by the excellent performances from the leading ladies. 4/10

Re: The Look of Love
I sort of enjoyed this film. The subject matter was interesting, and I thought that Steve Coogan was actually pretty good. I was, however, distracted by the couple to the right of me who gave each other a running commentary throughout the film, even when I politely asked if they could be quiet. The film just seemed to lack a bit of direction and be rather unsure of what it was trying to say. However, I did enjoy it, especially the way it moved through the decades.

Completely agree with you!steve wrote:Found this to be a pretty pointless film. Not much of a story, more like a documentary but with actors and what story there was wasn't very interesting.

I think the nudity was far from the reason why this film wasn't very good. Why is it a no-no?shazi wrote:Completely agree with you!steve wrote:Found this to be a pretty pointless film. Not much of a story, more like a documentary but with actors and what story there was wasn't very interesting.

But yeah, I thought this pretty much sucked. I thought Coogan was terrible, there was zero narrative thrust and considering how many comedy actors are in it, it's not particularly funny.
In the end I just don't think the story of Paul Raymond is a particularly interesting one. Here's my full review:

Re: The Look of Love
Why did this need comedy actors? Why would the true story of someone's life need to be a comedy? I just didn't get it, never mind failing miserably to get Alan Partridge out of my mind.
All it was missing, what with so many bums and tits on view, was everything speeded up and the Benny Hill theme tune!

Re: The Look of Love
Saw this last night at Vue Islington and lovely to see PXC, Livi92 and ejwrank.
As for the film it was a very workman like biopic about a man which any normal person would find hard to relate to. The film looked great and also has a great soundtrack which adds to the film. Yes, there is nudity but mostly it is appropriate. After all this is an 18 rated film and it is also about a pornographer.

Re: The Look of Love
I don't often read a synopsis before I see a movie and for some reason expected this to be a comedy, probably from a glimpse of the cast list, and as prettyxcool did I nodded off too, I was quite surprised to discover this is a true story and thought something more could have been made of the central characters backgrounds so I could at least empathise - which I didn't, boring from me and the nudity, which I do think was appropriate, seemed a little odd at first and then somehow I switched off and didn't really notice it. Perhaps it was because I was watching in Norwich and Alan Partridge unintentionally shone through, very odd

Re: The Look of Love
Perhaps if Steve Coogan didn't look like Alan Partridge and sound like Alan Partridge...
Wonder who they'll choose to play the part of Alan Partridge in the biopic of Alan Partridge?
As this was anything but a comedy (apart from David Walliams' vicar swearing perhaps), why on earth did they not use serious and unknown actors? So distracting.
Dara O'Briain playing the part of a period (70s) stand-up comedian really was just taking the piss as far as beleivability was concerned. I mean he was just play the part of himself basically, only transposed 40 years into the past. Lazy casting.

Re: The Look of Love
As usual, I did not look into the film before going. I thought it was dull, depressing and a shoddy story put together awkwardly. Surely, most people go to the cinema to escape and to be taken to another world or place. This film has no place as a cinema release, it felt more like a tv movie. Three couples left during the performance and comments of 'glad I didn't p*y for it' was overheard on the way out. Until near the end I did not feel I was watching a film at all and I was wondering if there was a story at all.
I will say it left me feeling sad at the end but not for Raymond but the unfortunate daughter. 4/10
