I thought Shutter Island would be nominated for at least one award...maybe it's been forgotten!

The comedy or musical noms are beyond ridiculous. Was it really such a poor year for those two genres? Damn.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

There's a feature on Empire's website entitled "Golden Globes: WTF?" I couldn't agree more with what is said, if you haven't read it already please do:

One possible reason for the ridiculous nominations:

You're right! but not many people have seen The King's Speech yet in the States as it's only still on limited release... we shall see

Can someone who has seen both films tell me what they think? I haven't seen the Social Network yet, so can't compare.

AYBG wrote:Well, The Social Network's in pole position for Oscar glory... it's won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the LA Film Critics Association, as well as joint honours in Best Direction and Best Score.

Much deserved in all said areas.

Watched both movies. I love them both because of totally different reasons. The Social Network has a very interesting approach to peel each layer of Facebook history. The movie used flashbacks to relate each allegation. And the movie was so fast, we're always at the edge of our seat. And it's more current relatable

The King's Speech is an epic. But the focus is more on the emotion side of a King with disabilities. I love it since it's not about a King just being powerful but how fragile he can be too and to show us royalties are human. It's not about the war with the German but the war to fight his impediment.

I would love to see King's Speech to win but I think the clever way Social Network was presenting in the movie giving it the extra edge. But I definitely routing for Firth and Rush for Globes ;) However, any of these 2 win, I'm happy! :cross:

Thanks, that was very interesting.

Whilst in the past the Oscars have infuriated me, you can generally make a case for most of the winners (apart from the foreign language films, which have overlooked some great films)

Even films like Titanic or Forest Gump, which divide viewers are both amazing purely on a technical level, the Golden Globes are just baffling.

Bribery and the push for ratings would explain a lot.

I've seen both, and I believe that both were filmed marvellously - but I think on the acting side The King's Speech is far stronger with its cast of British thespians.
