Having seen it twice now (including a Q&A with director) I'm still quite confused about the ending. I know what the director said so that must be the reality, but on second viewing I'm not so convinced. Maybe amiguity is the safest conclusion!

BTW director explained that the washed out colour and "over-bluing" of greens etc was to portray the melancholia of 1920s England with the horror and disease of recent war and the illness and death of the influena epidemic of the time.

OH and I both thought the film was cracking. Not scary but spooky at times and very atmospheric. Very beautifully shot, with fabulous actors. The end was so sad and moving, I had tears in my eyes. And I admit I didn't see the twist coming. It had me hooked from the opening scene where a seance is rudely interrupted by Rebecca Hall, proving them all to be charlatans, and it goes on strongly after that when she is asked to investigate a ghostly appearance in a boarding school for boys, where a boy has recently died. There are no bright colours in this film but it just adds to the sad atmosphere where, according to the matron, "it is perhaps understood better than anywhere what it means to be lonely", or words to that effect.

I am glad I came out to see it, I really really liked this, and I wouldn't mind taking a second look now that I know the ending.

I totally agree with Beate's review. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Good story with twists. Would welcome a 2nd look!

I offered my tickets up for Thursday, but now am torn too!

My mother probably didn't notice, she found it boring and not scary. I saw her yawn a bit .

wow. Wasnt expecting it to be anything like it was. And I'm a real sucker for movies with a twist that I don't see coming. Loved it!
From the BBC too! *shock horror!*
Will definitely be seeing this with my unlimited card again once it comes out!

I didn't find it very scary but enjoyed the film. We were also a bit confused at the end of it and having discussed it with the people sitting beside us we all eventually came to the same ending - but were we correct! Pm's from stuartboy required here me thinks if he knows what the director said!!!
