Oscars 2014
I think I need a mini break from Apartheid/Butler/Slavery films, but it is going to be 12 Years a Slave's year.
It should win on merit, however I am sure others might say "it's the right thing to do".
Although I am not sure Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance is necessarily better than Idris Elba.
No British bias, but I am routing for Judi Dench or Emma Thompson for Best Actresses but I don't think they will beat Cate Blanchett. I haven't seen August: Osage County yet, doesn't Meryl get a nom almost every year, but it doesn't look likely this year.

Re: Oscars 2014
Chiwetel was so much better than Idris Elba (who wasn't nominated for the Golden Globe, which tends to be a strong indication for the Oscars, especially with the quality of the 'comedies' this year). I think from the films I've seen his stiffest competition is Christian Bale, but I also hear incredible things about The Wolf of Wall Street, so we'll see.
I'm going to watch Blue Jasmine this week, as the things I'm hearing about Cate Blanchett's performance say its astounding. Can't wait for August: Osage County, despite the bad reviews, because its still getting acclaim. It confuses me.
In my perfect world, the male acting awards would go to 12 Years a Slave and the female to American Hustle, but we'll see how it goes.

I really liked the female performances in American Hustle too, but don't think they will give it to Jennifer Lawrence again so soon.
Really pleased to see so much British talent involved in most of the award contenders this year.

Re: Oscars 2014
I was hoping saving mr banks to get more nominations than it did - Emma Thompson for lead actress? Script?
Also I would question the decision to nominate 'the croods' for best animation, it was awful! Monsters university?
I think Steve McQueen will be getting the award for best director- "12 years as a slave"

You'd have to ask AYBG. He usually waits till shortly before.

Re: Oscars 2014
I think there might be a few upsets this year.
Re: Oscars 2014
This year is going to be so interesting. I have yet to see Nebraska but the Best Actor race already has me cringing, especially because Matthew McConaughey seems to be racking up all the awards thus far. Shocking because I honestly don't think his was the best performance of the year.
Not making a pick yet in that category because I haven't seen all the films yet but will do once I've seen Nebraska. Already making my picks in a few other categories!
