The Aftermath

#1 Post by DustyRopeDrum » Mon Mar 04, 2019 6:06 pm

Film about the immediate post-war situation in German city days after the allied victory in WWII. Keira Knightley baring her teeth again as a not-so-hero heroine, but confused, neglected wife of busy army chief, and with a guilt complex about death of young son by German bomb. Over-acts in parts but quite good viewing.

The acting and scenery is great, but a slow period drama, starts well but then ends up into a predictable romantic drama, during the post war reconstruction in Hamburg.

A huge sumptuous mansion, strangely unaffected by the war, is requisite for the British Colonel and his wife to live in, relegating the owner, a widower, the extremely handsome and hunky Alexander Skarsgård, and his daughter to the attic instead of to a camp.

Jason Clarke, as the British Colonel, is more sympathetic towards the Germans (hence allowing the widower to stay), with, Kiera Knightley, his wife having more antagonistic feelings. He brings her to Hamburg to join him, but she is left all alone in the mansion, while he is out overseeing the post war settlement, and predictably, she is drawn to the lonely widower.
