Thunder Road

Thunder Road, one of the best films I saw at the London Film Festival last October, is finally getting a UK release at the end of the month.

Directed, written by and starring relative unknown Jim Cummings, it's the story of a police officer in a small Texan town whose life starts to slowly unravel after an attempt to give a eulogy at his mother's funeral goes wrong.

What could have been a bleak and heavy film, is anything but thanks to an excellent central performance and an often very funny script.
There are several laugh out loud moments along the way (one scene involving a purple felt tip pen and an attempt to bond with his daughter has a particularly inspired p*y-off), but it is also oddly moving too.
Fine support comes from Nican Robinson as his partner, Kendal Farr as his daughter and, in a memorable cameo, Blue Ruin/Green Room's Macon Blair as his daughter's home room teacher.

Adapted from his own 2016 short of the same name, Thunder Road marks Cummings as a ridiculously talented filmmaker to watch (according to the end credits he also help with editing and VFX).

Enjoyed the original short, I'll catch this when I can.
