I saw this last week at an Odeon Screen Unseen. I'd seen a couple of trailers for it, but didn't know much about it and was pleasantly surprised. It is a little predictable, but it is a real feel-good movie with some genuinely very funny moments and a sensitive touch. It's really worth seeing.

Julie Walters steals the show, but the lead Jessie Buckley is fantastic as is Sophie Okonedo. In fact all the performances (including the children) are so good that as a Glaswegian, I can even forgive a couple of the slightly dodgy accents.

Spoiler
Without giving too much away (but I'll mark it as a spoiler anyway): a young Glaswegian single mother, newly released from jail is determined to continue pursuing her dream of being a country singer and moving to Nashville: life, of course, gets in the way.

Caught this last night and really enjoyed it. Went along knowing only two things: Glasgow and Country music scene. It didn't fail to deliver on those. What we got as well was a rather good, if slightly kitchen sinky tale of a young woman's struggle to find success in music.
I thought Julie Walters was almost unrecognisably convincing as the Wegian granny.
Isn't that wee girl the one who says, "Ick a like a bar of chocolate please. It's for me mum" in the Dairy Milk advert?
It might have been better as a several parter on telly with maybe a little more character development in several minor roles, but as a film it ticked the required boxes. It even had several cameos in it as icing. I was more than half expecting the ubiquitous "based on a true story" real people photos in the credits, but no - it's not real and someone made the story up in their head! How novel!
It m sure I saw our MrsMgtMcG in several scenes -was she line dancing at the Glasgow Grand Ole Opry? Haha.

Lovely, just lovely. Finally, a film that does not end with ... based on a real story!

It has a great script, very uplifting and heartwarming. Full of heart, humour and a great soundtrack. A British "a star is born".

The three women are brilliant, as the three different mothers. Julie Walters, is always amazing, as the no nonsense mother and grandmother here. Jessie Buckley, the 'wild rose', what a moving performance, and what a brilliant voice, as the mother torn between chasing her dream, and looking after her young family, even though she is almost a child herself still (one scene where she throws a tantrum and sulks). Sophie Okonedo, who employs her as a cleaner, is also just fabulous as the good-hearted middle class mother.

There are some really lovely scenes between Julie Waters and Jessie Buckley as the mother and daughter. Brought tears to my eyes.

8/10

i loved this movie.. a feel good movie which once again demonstrated how we as humans can overcome adversity and tragedy.. turn it around... by holding on to our dreams and sometimes with a bit of luck.... Quality acting from the main stars!

Saw this today at Wimbledon Odeon. As usual, I hadn’t read anything about it beforehand. Had I known beforehand that it was about Country (note – not Country and Western) music, I might have given it a miss. It turned out to be an entertaining film about the struggles a newly released prisoner (Rose-Lynn played by Jessie Buckley) tried to overcome in order to achieve her ambition of becoming a Country star in Nashville. Her life was complicated by the fact that she lives in Glasgow, is a single mum of two young children and has no job. She eventually gets a cleaning job where she works for Susannah (beautifully played by Sophie Okonedo). Julie Walters played Rose’s pessimistically down-to-earth mother, Marion. Jessie Buckley first came to our attention as the Irish runner-up on I’d Do Anything (the search for a new star to fill the role of Nancy in Oliver!), and in this film she again proved that she can act and sing. A charming film. 7/10

this was okay, a gritty role for the Buckley girl from talent tv, that bucks the trend of glam and spectacle in recent music biopic-style movies. We got screen 7 at wimbledon which is a rare treat for a free movie. Countrys not my thing but the story is the main meal here. Yes i have been to country concerts, just not for very long lol.

The story was ok though I wasnt big her personality, she brought most of her troubles on herself..though I appreciate Rose was from a tough neighbourhood, her immediate family was ok.

I thought this film was just Ok. The story line was a bit predictable and there were some cringe worthy accents, but I did like the music even though I am not really a country fan.

I liked the movie even if it reminded me "A Star is Born". It was a little rougher version, and also a little predictable, but worth seeing!

I really enjoyed this film which follows Rose's efforts to become a Country star. While the plot was somewhat predictable there were some unexpected twists when Rose does not get 'discovered' when she slips away during a theatre tour to perform on stage and when she leaves Nashville after just a few days without pursuing her ambition to become a Country star. It had a wonderful feel good ending when Rose not only realises her dream but also accepts her responsibilities as a mother and begins to appreciate and be appreciated by her own mother. The three main characters played by Jessie Buckley, Julie Walters and Sophie Okonedo were beautifully acted and Ms Buckley has an opportunity to showcase her voice.

8/10
