Saw this tonight at Empire- and bagged a recliner!

Really, really enjoyed it. Great relationship between the two characters, and a great soundtrack. And of course the food!

Saw this at Wimbledon Odeon last night. Knew nothing about this film when we went in - apart from the fact that it starred Viggo Mortensen. I didn't even recognise him at first as he had piled on 45lbs for the role. In essence the film was a bit like Driving Miss Daisy - but in reverse, where Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American, rough-talking, former bouncer was the driver for Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a very refined, well educated, African American virtuoso pianist. Set in 1962, we watch them go to the deep south where racial segregation was the rule. White people were OK p*ying to see a talented pianist like Dr Shirley perform, but this did not stretch to allowing him to eat in the same restaurants, stay in the same hotels or even use the same toilets. With a very well-written script (incidentally written by Tony Vallelonga's real-life son), well-chosen cast and some great acting, it was the sort of film that I didn't want to end.
An excellent film - light-hearted enough to keep you amused, but with dark undertones to make you think. A must-see. 10/10

I couldn't help thinking of Eddie Murphy in Coming To America when I saw Don Shirley sitting in his leopard skin on that throne of his.
I enjoyed this - loved the story unfolding - and didn't notice the time passing, but I don't think I'd watch again nor b*y the DVD. I'm glad to have seen it though. Definitely an eye-opener. Bigots.

Best film I’ve seen in a long time. Excellent performances from the 2 leads.
Good to see the story play out.
Having road tripped through the south was delighted to see the Peabody Hotel and ththe town of Macron, Georgia - it still looks the same!
I also loved the music. I will be looking online for some Don music.

I had a 2nd screening of this tonight and really enjoyed it yet again. My friend who was my +1 was absolutely delighted to have had the chance to see it. 2 great main characters who made very interesting travel companions.
Marks 9/10
