Secret Cinema

It surprises me somewhat to find that there have been relatively few posts about Secret Cinema on this forum - although of course the prices are about as far from free as you can get! For those who don't know, it's a mysterious organisation that exhibits films accompanied by live actors, set design,...

Re: The Double

I see that Everyman Cinemas are marketing this as "A Delicious Comedy". I haven't seen the film (was planning to, and may yet, but considerably discouraged by majority view here), but that's not the impression conveyed by members' comments. Reminds me of the poster for Slumdog Millionaire which lau...

Re: The Double

I'm utterly confounded at the negative reception that The Double has received on FMUK; it seems that many were expecting something conventional and familiar. I personally think it's an audacious and rather brilliant piece of work. Jesse Eisenberg gives a deeply intelligent and nuanced performance - ...

Under the Skin

I saw Under the Skin at the London Film Festival last October, and it comes out on general release this Friday. Of the five films I saw during the two weeks of the festival (I know, lightweight...) it was far and away the best of lot, maybe even one of the greatest examples of contemporary cinema - ...

Re: The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza)

I'm demonstrably late to this short-lived conversation, but I recently saw The Great Beauty at the Prince Charles Cinema and really enjoyed it, contrary to those who have posted above! Of course it's full of ennui and existential questioning, but I thought that it was genuinely colourful and intelli...

Re: BAFTAs 2014

That was probably the most satisfying BAFTA awards I've yet seen. 12 Years a Slave and Gravity well rewarded, both films having a very British connection - especially the latter with its London-based technicians and visual artists. Tinie Tempah high-fiving Prince William was brilliant. Also great to...

Re: 12 Years A Slave

Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding. Utterly exhausting, but it's nothing short of a modern masterpiece.

Here's my review: http://jacobthehobnob.wordpress.com/201 ... s-a-slave/

10/10 - here's hoping that it will clean up at the Oscars

Re: The Hunger Games

I think it has something to do with the fact that, [spoiler]for the first 2 books katniss was fighting against the control, the evil of the capitol and had become quite independent and knew the consequences her actions would bring her. Yet in the final book she lets herself becomr a pawn for the re...
