Re: The Disaster Artist

Had expected a ‘mockumentary’ style film but ‘The Disaster Artist’ is close to being a documentary- a dramatised re-creation of an actual event. It is not always easy to watch – Franco does not make Tommy Wiseau anything but self-deluding, needy and bloody irritating- but is horribly funny. The comp...

Re: Wind River

An excellent film. The stark setting and understated but brutal action creates a convincing background of a culture in which survival is a struggle

Re: Gold

The first hour or so of Gold amounts to a character study before a series of twists and turns develop that pushes it towards a different style. Yet as everything is played so close to the chest it is hard to be sure if this is a modern morality tale or a conventional thriller and this tentative appr...

Re: Me Before You

A disappointingly passive heroine. Unlike , say, Educating Rita she does not seek out challenges but just waits for the rich bloke to hand her presents. The point seems to be that wealth, not love, conquers all.

Re: Miles Ahead

Agree. It seemed that the crime caper sub-plot trivialised the character of Miles Davis which surely can't have been the intention.

Re: Eddie The Eagle

I kept hoping for some form of context. We never find out how Eddie's life changed as a result of his experiences or if his actions prompted the Olympic committee to make any changes to their out-dated policies

Re: Entourage

As someone who watched the series only occasionally I wasn't impressed. The film seemed flabby - just an extended episode that did not exploit the opportunities offered by the cinema medium

Re: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Matthew Vaughn hedges his bets either in an effort to please everyone or to offset criticism. As a result the film has an edge of compromise- the violence is graphic so as not to seem sensationalised but stylised (very little blood) so as to avoid offence. The class system is both criticised and cel...

Re: Whiplash

This is a remarkable study in obsession and the pursuit of perfection. Simmons is stunning. His performance is so beautifully ambiguous you can’t be sure, until his final petty action suggests a sadistic motivation, whether he really believes his extremist approach is correct.
