Re: First Man

How do you film a story that everyone knows, thus negating dramatic tension, about a somewhat repressed individual, prickly and taciturn, thus negating audience sympathy, and retain viewers attention and/or interest? Answer...effects. This film is a master class in soundscaping. Oscars beckon for so...

Re: A Simple Favour

Was this a thriller with comedic tendencies or a comedy with a dark underbelly? I’m not sure if the makers were really sure so for me it sort of fell between the two. I enjoyed it overall, but perhaps it would have been stronger with a better focus. Excellent performances from all concerned. My OH g...

Re: American Animals

By some considerable distance, this is my film of the year so far. A quite brilliant take on a heist movie, but blended with documentary style real life inserts. Laugh out loud moments mixed with open mouth incredulity. Also so topical in view of ongoing debate about so-called fake news. When two fi...

Re: The Children Act

Enjoyed the film and agree on performances being excellent. However, I felt that more exposition was required to allow us to know more about the characters. Stanley Tucci’s role in particular was badly underwritten, with the result that he became something of a cipher. The boy at the centre became a...

Re: The Spy Who Dumped Me

Jarring mishmash of genres. Part thriller, part comedy, part buddy movie. Lots of violence and action set pieces which are actually well done, but if you follow this with comedy the violence needs to be cartoonish not graphic as it is here. The buddy aspect also does not work as there is little beli...

Re: Damascus Cover

Better than expected in view of bad reviews. Low-key old -fashioned spy drama. Good antidote to the ludicrous MI Franchise of ‘I do all my own stunts’. 7.5/10

Re: Sgt. Stubby

Surprised at just how excellent this was. Really good animation and rounded characters. It made me look up the real story of Sgt. Stubby and was amazed that it’s all true. Brilliant that the film is able to tell a story of the horrors of WW1 whilst remaining family friendly, a difficult balancing ac...

Re: MI Fallout

Agree with above. All stunts, no content. The sort of film where you feel you’ve seen a masterpiece as the credits roll, but as you’re driving home you begin to realise it made no sense and plot holes were gigantic. Acting really poor from everyone. My initial mark of 8/10 has been reducing steadily...

Re: Sicario2

I have not seen Sicario 1 so I felt I was at a distinct disadvantage even though 2 was marketed as standalone. Decent film with some good action sequences, let down somewhat by far fetched plot development two thirds of the way through and silly ending. Del Toro carries the whole film and lack of fe...

Excellent low-key drama with great performances. Shows a side of American culture not often seen and has a good soundtrack. So much more satisfying than CGI extravaganzas, with characters you actually care about. Well worth seeking out, one of my films of the year. 9/10
