Re: Searching

A very effective, reasonably tense, if unsurprisingly gimmicky, thriller with solid performances from Cho and Messing. If I have a slight criticism it's that an early photo includes a knowing detail that basically gives away what actually happens to Margot. It involves the photo of her first day at ...

Re: Deadpool 2

Had a lot of fun with Deadpool 2 which takes the fourth-wall breaking gags of the original and turns them up to 11. Basically if you loved the first one you'll probably love this (ditto if you hated it). Ryan Reynolds is unsurprisingly good in the lead, though of the returning cast members Karan Son...

Lean on Pete

For his 4th feature, Weekend and 45 Years director Andrew Haigh makes his 1st in the US (not counting HBO's Looking: The Movie) with Lean on Pete. An adaptation of the novel by former Richmond Fontaine frontman Willy Vlautin, it tells the story of 15 year old Charley who is always moving around the ...

Custody

First time French filmmaker Xavier Legrand deservedly won the best director award at Venice last year for this lacerating domestic drama about the fallout of a bitter custody battle. In a court, the lawyers of separated couple Antoine and Miriam are discussing the custody of their 12 year old son Ju...

Thoroughbreds

Directed by first time filmmaker Cory Finley and produced by The Way Way Back directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, Thoroughbreds is a deliciously dark drama with outstanding performances from Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy. Two teenagers and former childhood friends Amanda and Lily are reunited when ...

Re: A Quiet Place

Very impressed by John Krasinski's A Quiet Place. A concise and effective horror about a family trying to survive quietly in rural America from blind creatures that hunt by sound. A neat premise that offers up plenty of tense nail-biting sequences without losing sight of the strong emotional weight ...

Re: Ghost Stories

Anyone else notice the TV ads for Ghost Story state "in CIMENAS ARPIL 6"? Am assuming this is intentional. Yes, some of the posters have 'The brain see waht it wnats to see' on them as well. Here's an article with other mistakes on one poster and the reason for them. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/...

Re: Ghost Stories

Ghost Stories for a 3rd time this morning at Picturehouse Central. Just as much fun watching it again, mainly to spot all the visual and verbal clues hidden in plain sight that didn't register on the 1st or even 2nd viewing. The nine numbers appearing throughout, often separate on posters, message b...

Ghost Stories

As expected, tonight's Odeon Scream Unseen was Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson's Ghost Stories, an enjoyable homage to old school British anthology horror films. Nyman himself takes the role of supernatural sceptic Professor Goodman who is given the task of investigating three accounts of unexplained in...

Ready Player One

Had a lot of fun with Ready Player One this morning. Spielberg along with screenwriters Zac Penn and the original book's author Ernest Cline do a decent job of bringing it's 80's reference-crammed plot to the big screen in a way that's enjoyably thrilling rather than tiresomely knowing. While the po...
