Re: Finding your feet
Surprised by this film. Was not expecting much but it turned out to be rather charming. Yes, clunky and predictable but so well acted that it carried me along and worked well. 8/10

Re: Game Night
Perhaps I was looking forward to this too much as I loved Horrible Bosses and this promised more of the same. But alas, the chemistry of the ensemble acting was not as sharp in this. I laughed throughout but can’t help feeling disappointed. A good film but I felt it could have been better. 7/10

Re: Red Sparrow
A sexy thriller that was neither sexy nor thrilling. JL, what were you thinking of when they offered this part to you? In the present climate of Weinstein et al sexploitation is not the way to go. The plot was riddled with gaping holes and dire accents abounded. By the end, poor Jeremy Irons had sim...

Re: Darkest Hour
Great central performance from Oldman and supporting cast uniformly excellent, but let down by narrative flaws and theatricality. Might have worked better as 2 part TV film. Central messages of strong leadership and dangers of appeasement are really relevant for today but I doubt that younger viewer...

Missed this one in view of Storm whatever-name but loved comments by friends who made the trip that they found it so dull they tried to sleep through and were disappointed they couldn’t drop off!

Re: The Florida Project
Puzzled by hype this film has garnered from critics. Case of liberal guilt trip perhaps? Some have praised it because it shows childhood without sugar coating. Others like its humour (sic) For me it was way overlong and came across as an improvised acting workshop. Indie darling Dafoe could have pho...

Re: Limehouse Golem
Really enjoyed this film. But my OH hated it. I am really interested in anything Victorian, music hall and Jack the Ripper so this was right up my street. Bill Nighy will get all the plaudits but Olivia Cooke is the real star. It is based on a postmodern novel by Peter Ackroyd and this is why the to...

Re: La La Land
Huge disappointment after all the hype. A song and dance film with no good songs and very poor choreography. Acting from everyone was first-rate. Which begs the question; why not choose actors with musical theatre background? The 'jazz' was banal, as any jazz fan will tell you. Cinematography was ex...
