Re: Frances Ha

Maybe so, but in motion I thought it was absolutely disgusting, not calculated at all.

Re: Frances Ha

I'd hazard a guess that this is aided by Gerwig's work on the writing of the film. The films she chooses are often of the kind of tone and style and feeling of Frances, so perhaps Baumbach's want to change up and go back to his more comic roots were enhanced by Gerwig's want to create the most Gerwi...

Re: The Lone Ranger

I was looking forward to this one despite all word to the contrary. But yeah, a character-less mess that runs about 60 minutes too long, is stupid and tonally wrong, and Depp is abhorrent.
Though no one gets out of this one unscathed. Yeesh.

Re: The Wolverine

Saw it this morning. It was good, whilst Logan was in the Yukon it was fascinating. Then they flew to Tokyo and it got boring real quick, which oddly is the only thing that's fast in the whole film. A dull dull slog, both super serious and full of silly stuff like the robot samurai. How it got a 12a...

Re: Frances Ha

I saw it last month. I love Noah Baumbach. From Kicking & Screaming to Greenberg, I've enjoyed his works so much. This was a pile of crap. Gerwig is not a good lead, I don't think I've liked her since Greenberg, and this was just an infuriatingly hipstery w*nkathon film. No characters deserved to li...

Re: BFI all-nighter

Good Q.
Just saw Wright's latest, thank goodness we didn't have it at the end of the night, because man is it a step down from even Fistful. That might have been a one-draft script, but it has about 50 more jokes than his newest one.

Re: Pacific Rim

Mine's a high 3/5, and I enjoyed the comic relief, it was the right way to handle all the exposition, Kaiju-wise.
It's all slightly silly and accepting the action genre's roots/evolution, even if it starts off real slow. Last hour, though, blasts by with crazy fun.

Re: BFI all-nighter

I didn't make the whole night, as I had worked the London Film/Comic Con all day prior, and slinked out after Hot Fuzz. Glad I finally saw Fistful, laughed plenty at that one. The Ant-Man stuff, not sad I missed that, saw it months ago and it was neat but wouldn't have appreciated it when on the ver...

Re: A Field in England

Saw this tonight at 4HQ. It'll be divisive to say the least. Experimental, but narratively bunk and the characters/dialogue is quite awful.
The last 15 minutes involves a lot of crazy editing and strobing that really really hurts.
