FMUKCON - 2019 - Durham

#1 Post by steve9872 » Thu Sep 27, 2018 6:28 pm

Its been 5 months since the "wait for it" message was put on this site. Surely some progress has been made, and if not another location needs consideration.
If nothing is done soon then there won't be a meet up next year.

Time to pick a suitable date.
I've changed this to a poll and only included dates I can actually make. Easter is obviously also left out.
You get one vote but you can change your mind.

April 13th is the majority choice so that's the date.
Voting is now over, its been a long time so there is no excuse for not voting

Assemble at 10am in the Market Place. Those who arrive early will be met by myself and guided towards a coffee shop while waiting for others to arrive. As yet, we don't know what time everyone is arriving.

10am. Tour of the Town Hall. This is free. We will receive headphones and whatnot, and can walk round at our leisure. Spend 45 minutes here.

10:45 Leave Town Hall, and walk up Sadler Street, and Owengate to Palace Green.

11:15 Tour of Castle. If we all go, the charge is £4.50, or £3.50 for over 60s. I need to know how many of us want to go in the Castle, as I have to inform the Curator, so we get the reduction. There is a wedding in the Castle on the 13th, and this time is best for us. We could have visited at 10:15 but then we would have had to walk back down to the Town Hall. I am trying to be considerate here - I don't know everyone's level of fitness, or indeed their stamina, so am trying to keep the walking down to a minimum.

Approx 12 noon: Leave the Castle, and pop down to the World Heritage Site Visitors' Centre for a look round.

Approx 12:15 - still on Palace Green, go and explore Cathedral. Pop into Palace Green Library and see Cosin's Library.

Approx 1:30 head down to the Swan and Three Cygnets for lunch. I can book tables when I know final numbers.
The Swan and Three Cygnets were unable to reserve any tables on Saturday 13th April, so I have had to rethink our venue. I have booked a table for 12 at Lebaneat, which offers traditional chargrilled Lebanese food. They also offer vegetarian options. The restaurant is situated on the Bailey, and only a few minutes walk from the Cathedral.

You may like to look at the menu - www.lebaneat.co.uk

Be sure to click on the menu which says "Bailey".
Stay in pub eating lunch, drinking and being sociable and then at 3:00, we can choose: go on the boat trip for an hour (£8 per person)/ go back up to Palace Green, go and visit The Open Treasure Exhibition £7.50/ visit the Heritage Museum £3/ stay in the pub/ visit Tealicious tearoom opposite The Swan and Three Cygnets for more refreshments.

At 4pm, after the boat trip, my friend Clive might be available to give us a guided walking tour of the riverbanks. Slow amble - takes about an hour.

Most coffee shops and tea rooms close at 5pm but there are more places to walk, and many more pubs where tea and coffee are served.

For those staying overnight:
Sunday
Attend a service in the Cathedral, or I can suggest other services in other churches.
Visit the Botanic Garden - opens at 10 on Sunday, £4.50
Visit the Oriental Museum - opens at 12 on Sunday, £1.50
Redhills Mining Hall, near Flass Lane is now opening on Sunday, £3 for unemployed, £5 otherwise. You have to book online yourself. No direct ticket sales.
The Sculpture Walk - I have the leaflets - it's free.

I think that's about it. I have to contact the boat people - they don't start operating again until sometime in March, so need to find out what time their cruises are. Last year's cruises were at 12:30, 2:00 and 3:00.

I am looking forward to seeing you all and showing you my city. :D

Wow where does the time go?

It was unanimously decided that it will be Durham in 2019.

Are you suggesting that us ladies need to get a wriggle on and get organising? Point taken Steve9872 and let's get the ball rolling.

We probably need to do a poll for dates for spring.

It's only September - last year's planning didn't start before December, so what's the rush?

Settling on a location. Its the first thing that needs to be decided before any other decision needs considering, and we've been waiting 5 months for the announcement at the top of every page to change.

Besides, last year's planning felt rushed. It takes time to sort out transport and accomodation and that cannot start until the date has been organised. When the various accomodation offers come up, its best to be prepared early than be forced to let them go by because the decision hasn't been made yet.

You're making it sound as if it's my fault that my jokey message hasn't changed in five months! That message could say anything, I just decided to make it about FMUKCON, but until now I had no idea that there was apparently an "unanimous" decision made for Durham, as this decision seems to have been kept fairly quiet!

The Durham decision was made in Nottingham and we put it at the end of the Nottingham thread.
As Beate says we didn't start organising until December last year but I do get Steve9872 wanting to get a date sorted too.
We will all have a lovely day as usual as Durham is a beautiful city and the FMUKers are lovely people too.

We discussed Durham at the time given we haven't done it yet, and it's a nice compromise for all the FMUK Scots and Southerners. It's also a beautiful town, and we have both andrews and me as willing guides! ;)

Thanks for the nudge, steve9872, you're right, we do need to put some heads together and do some planning. If we don't decide on a date soon, life will get in the way and not everyone who wants to come will be able to make it.

We'll do some thinking about possible dates (based on what's going on in Durham) and float some on this thread when we have some options. o/
Preferred cinemas:
Vue West End, Cineworld Haymarket, Odeon West End, Odeon Leicester Square, Empire Leicester Square, Cineworld O2, Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue and Odeon Panton Street, followed by anywhere in central(ish) London.

I've created a poll with all the dates I can make. I've made it so that people can change their mind. We can sort out numbers later.
