I promised myself I wouldn't weigh in on this conversation but another promise to myself is now being broken. This is serious. We can't say we can go on with our lives as they have been because at the moment we cannot or at least we should not. It's true that young people may get coronavirus and not have too much trouble fending it off but the statistics go up very fast for 60 year olds up and for anyone with a pre-existing condition. So young people may be fine but may be spreading it to older, more vulnerable people. The UK government has dithered but it seems like next week they will stop all large gatherings and then this will hit home more than even having sporting fixtures cancelled. And let's face it, sporting fixtures have only just been cancelled because sporting leagues have taken the lead because the government wouldn't. Seems like staging the horseracing at Cheltenham was more important than the health of the nation.

Thanks, ejwrank, I too totally agree with you. Boris and the government have done nothing.

It's finding the right balance. Closing schools means grandparents, the most vulnerable, are having to deal with childcare, if parents are unable to work from home.

For most people they will suffer symptoms and recover but passing onto the High Risk Group is the issue.

There needs to be a unified decision.

My company is worried, but only have a contingency for our clients, and can work from home, having meetings via video conference. My work is office based, and if I don't work, I don't get pa*d. Already, they are struggling due to Brexit, and could take drastic action like making me redundant, as a lot of small businesses are doing, or closing down.

Update from National Rail, and if people do want to cancel. Understandable.

https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations ... virus.aspx

Like all websites, it will be updated regularly.

Unfortunately I'm not most people, I have diabetes and a heart condition. A year ago I had serious pneumonia. I might not look sickly to you, but I guess I'm in the endangered vulnerable category.

I'm not telling anyone what to do - just please consider others in anything you do. People without symptoms can be carriers and spreaders. Herd immunity without a vaccine is not a concept that will work, as it will overwhelm the NHS. Those few percentages of people getting seriously ill translates into more beds than the NHS will be able to cope with! We don't even know yet whether there will be lasting immunity, and the rules for getting tested are a joke.

I just got this neighbourhood email which makes a lot of sense.

Thinking about you, Beate. Take care of yourself.

I didn't say you were. You definitely come under high risk.
It's worrying times for everyone, and pretty scary. I am wary of catching anything too, from people who are carriers and don't know it.

We should all take precautions, do whatever to keep each other safe. Be kind whether it be self isolating or not stockpiling, or helping each other or whatever. The government needs to be more proactive, like other governments in other countries. Total lockdown or not, so we know where we stand, especially those that are still having to work.

The get together is not set in stone, and can be postponed or cancelled, whatever people wish.

I don't want to cause discomfort to anyone. I am not saying it should go ahead or not. Just sharing facts as I know it.

I have been going out as usual but my family are concerned for me as being 73 years old, diabetic with other health issues (due at the doctor next week) they think I should not be travelling on buses etc. My younger daughter is a mental health nurse in a nursing home and she said if I get ill then she would have to attend to me and then she may carry it to the nursing home where they are frail and elderly and most with dementia. I have just read too that the government is talking about people over 70 self isolating for 3 months to protect themselves and limit the number of hospital beds.
I don't have a crystal ball to see if I took ill just how bad I would be so with sadness I have decided to cancel the trip to Glasgow. I was really looking forward to this and seeing everyone again but better safe and may see you all next time.

I wonder, given that some will have already booked and pa*d for travel and are still keen to go, that rather than cancel the weekend it is just postponed, and those that do go treat it as a reconnaissance trip for a rescheduled time later in year? This could help make the later event a lot better as well as giving folks something good to look forward to when things finally settle.

Well, I've already booked my travel and accommodation for Glasgow and it's all non-refundable, so there's no point in me cancelling anything at this stage.

Caledonian Sleeper are not allowing any changes/refunds - but I do wonder if the SNP will have leant on them by the end of March. LNER are offering full refunds!

Avanti West Coast are allowing a change, but only the one change, and no refund. A bit difficult to amend a booking when we have no idea when the worst will be over, and tickets really far into the future have not yet been released.

Travelodge are not offering any changes/refunds. Hilton are, even on advance non-refundable bookings. TBH, I'm not sure Travelodge will bow to any pressure.

The decision may well be taken out of our hands anyway by the end of March - I'm half-expecting a lockdown by then.
Preferred cinemas:
Vue West End, Cineworld Haymarket, Odeon West End, Odeon Leicester Square, Empire Leicester Square, Cineworld O2, Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue and Odeon Panton Street, followed by anywhere in central(ish) London.
