Tolkien

#1 Post by raj101 » Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:53 pm

flashback style Tv period drama really but it was well done, certainly big for diehard fans with a lot of thought given to the evolution of the writers ideas from his own life experiences. The leads were surprisingly ok actually though too old to convince as 17 year olds and too young to pass for the older versions. They turned up for an intro too which was nice of them.

If I am being picky.....Lily should do her research before rote speaking her speech, she was preteen when LOTR came out so could never have auditioned for Arwen, and Edith inspired Luthien not Arwen. part time fans.....

2.5 stars for anyone, 4 stars for fans

She said she auditioned for Evangeline Lily’s character which was The Hobbit trilogy rather then LOTR trilogy, which was filmed 10 years later, and she would have been old enough.

cheers that does make sense, I must have missed she said that. Although that makes her less coherent - Edith didnt inspire Tauriel, Jacksons "addition", she inspired Luthien.

Went to see it on Monday. Quite liked it, it was a very nice movie, not overly complicated, and well filmed. I'm curious to know how much was "fact" and how much was fiction, but that's simply because I don't know Tolkien and his work well enough.

I found it very dull and was virtually empty in the screen

I've not been well so thought I'd try and catch up some films I've missed . . .I'm not sure Tolkein was the best film to choose. It was ok but didn't feel as though it was special in any way . . .the fact I was only person in the screen should have told me something.

Biopic of Tolkien's early life from being an orphan, to a scholar, to the time he spent in the Somme trenches in World War I, to being an author. About love, friendship, loss, the horrors of war, all of which provided inspirations for his books. Interesting, but felt the magic is missing. 7/10
