Casino Royale was the start of the rebooted series - ie. grittier, less gadgety & a little more grounded in reality.

Yes, that's it! The Bond formula, pre-Craig. Thanks!

Just got back from an afternoon screening. Loved it. I think it had me when the MGM Lion roared its loudest roar "I aint dead m****f*****s" (sorry I'm referring to the near death of MGM causing this long delay between bond films). Its not the best Bond, nor is it my favourite (which is OHMSS) but its still a great Bond movie. It does actually compare very much to OHMSS in that its more of personal journey type of film. Despite the recent in-thing for superhero movies to go the Nolanesque route (which while has been fantastic, will become stale very soon, if not already), this Bond still delivers the classic Bond traits and fun but rather spaced out in doses. But boy when it does, its done with LOVE baby. I love it when a bond surprise moment is accompanied by the wonderfully nostalgic Daaaaa Da motif. JB was the most deliciously camp bond villain I've seen since Tele Savalas's Blofeld. He was great, although he did strike a Ledger's Jokeresque tone, he was different enough to not be considered a rip-off. He was both funny, psychotic and justifiably highly motivated thanks to a splendid story which I hear is the biggest criticism but I beg to differ. I really liked the story. Its a clever encapsulation of everything about Bond and family. The characters had depth and were performed brilliantly. The opening is a tour de force of Bond doing what he does best with a relentless spectacle of setpieces and vintage stunt work rolling into the beautifully sultry voice of Adele's them song. This really is a an awesome 50 year tribute, somewhat bringing it full circle in a rather kaleidoscope manner. Its not without flaws, every bond movie has its flaws but as long as there is heart and soul put into the production, which this has in abundance, it has my total adoration and cheer.

I love all 6 generations of Bond films and a bit drunk with the film at the moment, therefore I cannot rank this amongst them, so its just down to how I feel right now...I feel like I want to see it again this weekend...So I think I'll give it 8.5/10ths of my loving.

I found this a weak addition to the Bond franchise. It is long (143 minutes) and boy does it feel long. It has a strong opening but the rest of the film doesn't really live up to it. It has nothing memorable about it, no spectacular action sequence, no great one liners or humour, no proper Bond girl and the villain seemed a bit ridiculous, without a properly developed backstory. Naomi Harris seemed to be trying too hard. The best performance came from Dench whilst Craig seemed to be going through the motions.
It was amusing to see James Bond use public transport for once but during the sequence on the underground, I couldn't help thinking that it is not a true depiction since London rush hour is so much busier!
An improvement on Quantum of Solace but a step down from Casino Royale.

Good stuff in the first hour, shame there's another 84 minutes afterwards which kinda suck. Maybe Roger Deakins' worst looking film, surprisingly, and horrendously paced, with Thomas Newman's score clearly hurting more than harming. It's a shame that before the Javier Bardem story came in, from the opening sequence through to Shanghai, it felt interesting, a fun but smart evolution of the franchise. Sometimes evolution, however, seems to hinder more than help. I don't want Bond to be Bourne, or freaking Batman, I just want him to kick arse and be fun to watch. Craig, this time, is not fun to watch.
Yeah, a missed opportunity to show Bond and JB squashed up in the train! Surely, would have raised a big laugh with London audiences, pity

That stuff took me out of the film, Temple and Embankment don't look like that, and those were not district line trains. Stupid Mendes.
Just did a parody of that Heineken ad, with a line from Quantum of Solace. Might as well pimp it here!
