Screenings

Free previews o/ o/ o/

1. Margin Call 8/10 Riveting drama about an Investment bank, no Economic qualifications necessary to enjoy this, engaging performances
2. War House 8.5/10 Sweeping epic. Gorgeous cinematography. Emotionally manipulative.
3. Haywire 4/10 One stand out action scene otherwise its dull, unengaging and devoid of any charisma
4. The Grey 8.5/10 Not your normal survival thriller, this is poetic and soul searching experience that will long in the memory
5. The Muppets 8/10 joyously nostalgic 1st and 3rd acts with a badly sagging middle part.
6. This Means War 8.3/10 high concept love triangle played out with charismatic performances and hilarious consequences
7. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 8.7/10 Exotic performances from the cast make for a charming, sweet film that conveys both the beauty and chaos of Mumbai and the insecurities of getting old
8. Safe House 6/10 Tedious chase thriller with the most unoriginal plot and a twist that's excruciatingly predictable, last act saves it but this very ordinary
9. The Pirates!: An Adventure with Scientists 6/10 Partly enjoyable but I am tired of the relentless barrage of naked gun style modern references and a lack of finesse in the jokes. A weaker offering from Aardmaan
10. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 6.5/10 Nice but very understated performances, basic plot but confusing narrative.
11. John Carter of Mars 3D 7.8/10 Highly entertaining and cheesy sci fi fantasy
12. We b*ght a Zoo 7/10 Sweet and gentle Disneyish film about a one parent family coming to terms with the loss of their mother by b*ying a Zoo
13. In Darkness 8/10 Harrowing and effectively horrifying Nazi occupation film based on a true story but its narrative flow is very flawed and much of the film is visually incoherent
14. Wild Bill 9/10 British version of Carlito's Way and its a brilliant one. Touching family drama, high tensions, wry humour, and super performances
15. Act of Valor 6.5/10 very patriatic, almost propaganda, stilted acting but the most riveting and well executed action sequences make this worthwhile
16. Cabin in the Woods 9/10 Super reinvigoration of the horror genre that's funny, scary, gory and radical
17. headhunters 9/10 Edge of seat Norwegian movie about an art heist that evolves into a relentless thriller with great plot twists and turns
18. A Royal Affair8/10 Absorbing Danish period drama based on a true story, well made and well acted
19. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen 8/10 Charming and whimsical romantic comedy with sparkling witty dialogue. Deserves a sleeper hit status.
20. The Dictator 7/10 Its funny but you may feel guilty laughing and felt I needed a shower afterwards

pa*d for 8O 8O 8O

1. Another Earth 7.5/10 Beautiful acted but uneasy drama with a hint of sci fi (albeit a ludicrously unfeasible concept) but I did not sympathise with the protagonist as I am supposed to
2. Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows 6/10 Disappointingly numbing until an enthralling last half hour. Pity.
3. Hugo 3D 8.7/10 Breathtaking 3D cinematography, enchanting movie and a love letter to cinema
4. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 8/10 Enthralling detective mystery/thriller with the panache of Fincher's dark tones signature
5. My Week with Marilyn 8.5/10 Engaging, funny, superbly acted and a beautiful snapshot of a Hollywood Goddess
6. W/E 8.5/10 Creative and innovative early effort from Madonna. A story about a modern girl's search for true love and her obession of the legendary lovers
7. The Darkest Hour 3D 5/10 Formulaic scifi alien invasion, end of world stuff, underwhelming but passable fun on the lowest denominator
8. The Descendants 8/10 Enjoyable down to earth comedy drama with a delightful anchor performance by Clooney
9. Intruders 6.8/10 Decent supernatural psychological thriller with a few genuine scares let down by predictable revelations
10 Chronicle 8/10 The superhero genre gets a highly entertaining "found footage" treatment
11 Man on a Ledge 7/10 Enjoyable thriller until the last ludicrous 10 minutes which went Nic Cage style wacky
12 Monster in Paris 8.7/10 Delightful animated feature, excellent story, sweet animation, and top class songs
13 Carnage 9/10 Witty ensemble piece driven totally by dialogue and superb perfomances with the 2nd funniest vomit scene ever.
14. Star Wars: Ep1 3D 8/10 3D is negligible but film is still a big screen visual treat despite some bland dialogue and acting
15. Contraband 7/10 Predictable but entertaining smuggling thriller
16. Kahaani 9/10 Superb and unpredictable mystery thriller that will knock you for six
17. The Raven 7/10 Enjoyable enough serial killer mystery thriller set in 19th century with a pulpy fiction slant...Seven meets Sleepy Hollow
18. The Hunger Games 7/10 Fantastic build up first half but a an underwhelming second half with a some of the worst executed action scenes
19. Mirror Mirror 6/10 Very panto version of the Snow White tale. Julia Roberts provide most of the fun but its one for the kids
20 Lock Out 6/10 Promising concept but bad executed action and lacklustre script lets it down. But Guy Pearce more than saves it as an enjoyable lead character fusing the best of Snake Piston and John McClane
21 Avengers Assemble 8.5/10 Dream come true nirvana of Comic book action. Subtlety, character development sacrificed for awesome superhero battles, humour and snappy dialogue
22 Battleship 6/10 Fun Micahel Bay homage. Ie gung ho, funny and scientifically stupid beyond belief
23 Safe 8/10 Relentless, exciting and violently satisfying on the Statham kickass scale
24 How I Spent My Summer Vacation 7/10 Good to see Mel Gibson back in badass role. This film could easily be called Payback 2. Not as slick as Payback though
25 The Raid 8/10 Relentless action, well choreagraphed and edited with superb camera work, basic story
26 Dark Shadows 6/10 As usual, Burton delivers a stunning visual canvas and a promising story but has no talent for a cohesive narrative, very dissapointing
27 Cafe De Flore7/10 Confusing editing to and fro structure about love from sensual to parental to dangerous obsession, intriguing but not sure if message is agreeable
28 Men in Black 38/10 Wonderful time travel movie with heart and soul firmly embedded into the dynamic relationship of Agents K and J
29 Prometheus8/10 Beautifully shot, good sci fi theme and some masterful moments of direction but there is a total disregard for established evolutionary science and a lack of character developments
30 The Pact7/10 Very enjoyable supernatural thriller. Suspenseful and engaging detective mystery storyline, clear influences from Sixth Sense, Poltergeist and Psycho

32. The Avengers 9
33. Spiderman 7
34. The Dark Knight Rises 10
