One was a really good film about a cricket match bet between the British Raj and the poor locals of an Indian Village who havent a clue how to play the game but is forced to try and beat the British team to win their freedom (or was it money? cant remember) but being a cricket fan I loved this one and it didnt have Sharukh Khan in it, lol...
I think you're talking about Lagaan. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169102/
I've watched it a couple of times, it's very good.
Lagaan is one of my favourite Bollywood movies...
Not a typical bollywood but a great story and great performances by the main actors.

I'd like to recommend a few more:
Devdas: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238936/
Veer-Zara: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420332/

If you're looking for something with a modern twist and some humour, give Salaam Namaste a go (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456165/)... o/

I've been told Ghajini is rather good. Not seen it but from the plot it seems to be 'remake' of Memento...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1166100/

Will post some feedback once I've given it a go...

Lagaan is great, if indeed untypical. I wonder what happened to that great female lead whose name I shall have to check on IMDB? But Veer Zara was horribly sad! Kal Ho Na Ho remains a favourite, partly because I love the soundtrack, which I have on CD.
