The greatest horror film ever is The Exorcist - nothing will lve up to that.
However, in recent years we have seen some truely outstanding horror, including:
Martyrs
Audition
Lake Mungo
Kill List

I was about to say Cube, but it's been mentioned before by drizzy5oh!
I would highly recommend it; I saw it on release in cinema with bf on my right and another male friend on my left, and those girlies could not stop jumping on their seats (I was quite shocked as well, I am just not the jumper type )
here is the IMDb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755/
I am not sure many people have seen it here, but it had a good run in France

There is some really good Spanish stuff as well!
Beate mentioned El Orphanado (The Orphanage), but you can also take a look at Intacto (Intact) and Tesis (Thesis); again not so much gore stuff in them but definitely material for some uneasiness and seat jumping!

A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, "Why the long face?"
A pony walks into the bar and whispers, "I'll have a beer, please." The barkeeper asks, "Why are you whispering?".
"I'm a little hoarse."

Re: Help: What's the best horror film?
As a child Jaws scared the pants off me for months. I think the modern horror stuff is a bit same old, same old so I don't watch them these days.
