Lawless

#2 Post by andrews » Sat Aug 18, 2012 8:23 am

Set in the 1920s prohibition era America, LAWLESS is the true story of the Bondurant brothers. Brazen and fearless, these young rural bootleggers became legendary criminals. The youngest brother, Jack (LaBeouf) is ambitious and impulsive, the middle brother, Howard, is loyal but reckless and eldest brother, Forrest (Hardy), leads the family with a silent determination. As the Bondurants’ illicit business and legend grows, so too looms the danger of bigger fish, and it’s not long before the brothers must face the consequences.

I found Lawless to be a bore. Two main protagonists barely battling for focus in the film, LaBeouf isn't engaging, and Hardy is in the wrong role. The film goes on for too long without really bringing the audience into the experience, more interested in making iconic moments that interesting characters, the climactic twenty minutes are a bit of a misstep leading to a middle finger towards the audience. Dunno how it got an 18 anyway, not that violent, only fleeting moments.

Just back from Milton Keynes Odeon. I enjoyed the film and thought the part was made for Tom Hardy. Thoroughly enjoyed the performances from the Actors, Guy Pearce in particular.

Back from Glasgow Cineworld. Good to see McG and teddybear1 and OH.

Well when you start the story about three brothers who are on the wrong side of the law the challenge then for the film maker is to make us like them. That fail for me as I never really warmed to Jack (probably cos it is Shia Labeouf) the main character. He was too cocky and stupid to be a strong likeable character. It would had been better if they focussed more on Forrest (who just reminded me of Bane in Batman, voice and all).

The story could had been told in half the time and even less if they had just shot the deputy when he first arrives. Didn't anyone else think Pearce looked so weird with no eyebrows?! Also Oldman was barely in the film even though he played the main mob leader.

It was disgusting, but a good film. Not the best of the year, not the most exciting nor creative, although I was strangely attracted by something that made me stay (Shia LaBoeuf? I normally like them tall and beardy...)
I give a 7/10 just for Nick Cave's work and for Shia LaBoeuf that I recently discovered as a director and enjoyed his craziness. I love weirdos.

is tom hardy going to grunt through all his roles from now on.

understood bane more than forrest.

ps, i know it was a ¨true¨ story, but unfotunately every mention of the name ¨forrest¨ conjures up images of tom hanks sitting on a bench, talking about life being like a box of chocolates. similar haircut too.

on the positive side, shia le-whatisname wasn´t terrible in this.
