Zero Dark Thirty

#1 Post by Celini » Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:13 pm

This actually reminds me a lot of the Hurt Locker; I really did not understand the buzz about it at the time, but still it got nominated for Best Feature and even worst got the Oscar!
Now, despite the anti-Bigelow/Zero Dark Thirty campaign, this one might nab the Oscar as well.

Here are my issues (pretty much the same as for the Hurt Locker): I found all the characters very bland and difficult to relate to, no amazing performances, no strong script, no entertainment value.
This is definitely not my favourite 150+ minutes film released in 2013.

7/10

I agree Celini, I think it's overhyped and characters a little dull. A good film but it's a 7/10 from me too.

If it's anything like the Hurt Locker then I'm definitely interested in this one.

Saw this tonight and was thoroughly impressed. Tense and exhilarating, after a slightly draggy first half hour, I would recommend. After this and Lincoln in the past couple of days, I can nearly forgive cinema for also producing the likes of I Give It A.... Wide Berth.
And John Barrowman plays a scene with James Gandolfini... who would have ever thought that possible?

Went to see this straight after the interminably dull Lincoln yesterday and, although I found it to be very watchable with a particularly tense last hour, I have to confess to a slight feeling that it is not worth as much hype as it has right now and it is certainly overlong.

Best moment for me was the rather bizarre 2 minute appearance from our very own John Barrowman.

Good movie nevertheless and worth a viewing. 7/10

Took quite a while to get going but definitely picked up in the second half. I don't think it can stand up against some of the other Oscar contenders but I preferred it over Flight and Life of Pi. The script is nothing to write home about but the action scenes at the end were executed well. I'm not too keen on the direction though, a bit too much shaky cam and too many close ups, I felt a bit claustrophobic at some points. 7/10.

After really liking The Hurt Locker, I was expecting something more from this movie. I guess it's hard to fit 10 years into 157 minutes but at times it felt like barely skimming the surface of the story and the characters. I did like it, but I am underwhelmed by it to a point that I don't even feel like talking about it.
