Free book
Telegraph readers can claim a free copy of 12 Years a Slave from Tesco Express stores nationwide, with the newspaper on Saturday, January 18, 2014.

To celebrate the release of the award-winning film, 12 Years a Slave, the Telegraph has teamed up with Penguin and Entertainment One UK to offer readers a free copy of the book, by Solmon Northup.
Solomon Northup is a free man, living in New York when he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Drugged, beaten, given a new name and transported away from his wife and children to a Louisiana cotton plantation, Solomon will die if he reveals his true identity. This is the searing true story of his twelve years as a slave: the endless brutality, daily humiliations and constant fear, but also the small ways in which he and his fellow men try to survive.
12 Years a Slave is a unique, unflinching record of slavery from the inside, and the incredible account of one man whose life was ripped from him - and who fought to get it back. The critically acclaimed film, in cinemas now, stars Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor and is the winner of a Golden Globe for best motion picture.
How to claim

Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding. Utterly exhausting, but it's nothing short of a modern masterpiece.

Here's my review: http://jacobthehobnob.wordpress.com/201 ... s-a-slave/

10/10 - here's hoping that it will clean up at the Oscars

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

Finally caught this yesterday (and got my free book - thanks Tilly) and it is a very impressive piece of film making. Yes it's brutal and it's heart wrenching but it is a very important film now and for the future and thank goodness the British had the guts to make it. I suspect it'll win Best Film at the Oscars and rightly so, but I don't think it will get any others, it's just too not American.
Fabulous acting from all the leads.

A resounding 9 from me

I finally caught this today and feel slightly underwhelmed after all the praise the film is receiving. It is an excellent piece of film-making with strong performances and a powerful story but the overall experience was not as poignant or distressing as I expected it to be. 8/10.

I Agree. Would only give it a 7/10

Outstanding performances by all the Actors (esp Michael and Chiwetel). A movie that deserves great accolades and respect for direction score.

9.5/10 for 12 Years a Slave.

Great movie but am I the only one who didn't feel like 12 years passed? Patsy looked about 20 all through and similarly Michael Fassbender and Sarah Paulson's characters did not age an iota. Solomon only looked older at the very end.
