Should we have a topic called Grammar, Beate?
Not BAFTA or Stephen Fry related but personally I cannot stand the use of sat and stood that seem to permeate the English language of late. I was NOT sat down but I was sitting down. You were NOT stood in a corner but you were standing in a corner and I would personally like to stick you in a corner if you continued to use stood instead of standing. I have no idea who invented this but it seems to be everywhere and when I hear it used by BBC news correspondents my heart sinks.

With all this messsaging and texting, people are losing all sense of grammar!
I love Stephen Fry, he is so funny! Here is someone so inspirational, suffering depression and 2 suicide attempts, acknowledges publicly that he has an illness. Well done to him! sorry, if going

Re: BAFTAs 2014
I vote for Beate and EjWrank to head a proper revival of the English language so beautifully spoken by the likes of our Queen, Basil Rathbone, George Sanders, and Trevor Howard. The British language evolved over the centuries but for some reason it just uglier. Even the new generation monarchy have lost the melody and beauty of their parents speech, using the crass lingo of modern slang. Innit?

Re: BAFTAs 2014
Speaking of grammar (and you guys are going to hate me for this), I have 2 pet peeves when it comes to British English.
One is the popular mispronunciation of the letter "H" - it's not "HAITCH" for God's sake! It's "AITCH".
As Steve Coogan says in ALPHA PAPA:
Eg. I was stood at the back and then I was sat on the floor.
It should be "I was standing at the back and then I was sitting on the floor".
One is the popular mispronunciation of the letter "H" - it's not "HAITCH" for God's sake! It's "AITCH".
As Steve Coogan says in ALPHA PAPA:
The other is the misuse of continuous tenses (as iterated by ejwrank above)."Ha" is the sound of the letter, aitch is its name. One is ha, the other is aitch. Neither is "haitch"
Eg. I was stood at the back and then I was sat on the floor.
It should be "I was standing at the back and then I was sitting on the floor".
Re: BAFTAs 2014
Absolutely, Jayman - I do so agree on both counts. Though re the latter, I believe "I was seated" (etc) is also correct, if not very conversational usage.Jayman wrote:Speaking of grammar (and you guys are going to hate me for this), I have 2 pet peeves when it comes to British English.
