Took a long while to get going. If you enjoyed Annabelle and are a fan of horror films then chances are you will enjoy this.

Released tomorrow, Friday 24th October

I found it very strange and unsettling, not sure what was real or not. Great performance by the mother and the 6 year old child 8/10

Saw this at Frightfest and thought it was a really good well made film that taps into your emotions.

Some good frights and threatening atmosphere throughout. I did find it a little disjointed though, as if it was a series of set pieces that were edited together. In so doing there were a few issues with continuity. Also some if it just didn't make sense.
I saw this in the quietest cinema I remember. By quiet I mean silent rather than empty. Hardly a sound was heard.
I'm a little freaked right now as on my return home tonight an internal window that I distinctly left closed was wide open, and just 2 minutes ago my front door AND internal door just blew open with an almighty crash! Ever so slightly twitched! Lol. Not even sure I want to hide under my covers tonight. Didn't work in the film!

This really didn't live up to expectations after hearing so many good things since Sundance. Very slow build up, some realy unnecessary scenes that slowed the film down.

There was only one really genuinely frightening scene which was when

we first see the Babadook (when that door opened and the Babadook scurried in to her bedroom my girlfriend jumped in fright).
Worth a watch but nothing to shout about really, bit of a let down and overhyped.

Hated the ending, felt there could have been a far more effective closure.

Also that voice was creepy. BA-BA DOOK-DOOK-DOOK!

I saw this with my mom on friday and like most we were sort of disappointed.
At two points I laughed, and the ending was so W.T.F, I lost all respect for the fact that it was kickstarted.
The most terrifying thing about the film for me was how she treated the child.
And jesus was that child terrifying looking when he was screaming.

5/10 purely because concept wise and visually they did an exceptional job with what they got!

Unsatisfying is the word the best describes this film for me, the first half is more downright depressing than scary & although things pick up in the second half I can't really say I was all that impressed with the conclusion.

On a more positive note, performances are on the whole very good & the film makers did well to ensure the visual effectiveness of Mister Babadook by keeping him in the shadows.

Overall it's not a bad film but as it didn't get close to living up to the pre-release hype it only gets a 7/10 from me...

It would have worked better as a horror movie with underlying subtext of

mental illness
Or as a straight drama with underlying horror.

It veers between the two when it chooses and ends up being an unsatisfactory horror with an obvious cause.
