Vacation

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Sat Aug 08, 2015 12:34 am

Saw this tonight at a special screening hosted by Warner Bros, introduced by Vine superstar Arron Crascall, thanks to ritamistry.

Did not expect to enjoy this film, but it was extremely silly and crazy. I really do not mind watching again, especially to see Chris Hemsworth, what a surprise, more than you think! I just love that man, so may be a bit bias, and he is hilarious here. The only downside I found is the father character is so annoying! :shifty: 8/10

Went to Lowry Manchester tonight and saw Vacation. A real surprise as I laughed out loud countless times and it was great entertainment - got to get me a Prancer car now...

I was at Manchester Lowry as well, I really enjoyed this, I saw the trailer on Sunday before Antman and was worried in case all the best bits were in the trailer, but they were not it was very funny, I laughed a lot and preferred it to Trainwreck last week 8.5/10 from me o/

This was a lot funnier than I expected, good central performances and some good cameos from Chevy of course, Charlie Day, the fours cops and the scene/film stealing Chris Hemsworth 7/10

Saw this in Glasgow Fort tonight and didn't have a very expectation but was pleasantly surprised. There were many laugh out loud moments although sometimes it did feel it was a series of short scenes all linked with the Vacation road trip. All characters worked well together and I do think that it was better than Trainwreck from last week.

You're too young to appreciate National Lampoon films. You need to see Animal House and continue from there. This film is a good revisit to the genre but you do need to appreciate the older stuff first to realise this was more of the same silliness.

Perhaps I went in with expectations lowered enough or I'm just becoming easily pleased when it comes to big screen comedy but I actually enjoyed the Vacation reboot quite a bit. It's hardly sophisticated (no surprise there) but writer/directors Jonathan M Goldstein and John Francis Daley keep the laughs coming frequently enough and with a surprisingly high hit rate. It doesn't all work of course but for every dud scene there's usually a stronger one around the corner.
Highlights include a running gag about the older Griswold son being bullied by the younger, a visit to the sister of lead character Rusty and her ridiculously well-endowed husband (played by a game Chris Hemsworth) and a dangerous river rapids trip with a just dumped tour guide played by Charlie Day and soundtracked to Nilsson's Without You.
The photo reveals during the opening and end credits are also amusing (real holiday photos at the beginning, characters from the film at the end).

Ed Helms plays exactly the same kind of character he usually does, though is well supported by Christina Applegate who, with Anchorman, has already proved she can hold her own in the comedy stakes. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo make a largely nostalgic cameo but one that Chase manages to enliven with some seemingly unscripted physical comedy. Also included are, the now obligatory, cameos from various US TV comedy performers which it would be rude to spoil (aside from the aforementioned Day. Sorry about that).

This reboot does just about enough to capture the anarchic spirit of the original, which it makes a few meta references to along the way. It's no classic and it's hard to think anyone is going to feel nostalgic about this 30 years from now but as a big screen comedy it has enough laughs to make it worth seeing. Which is all you want really.
