McG wrote:I found Silence to be one of the most intense films I have ever watched. I knew in advance it was going to be a long film so did take a small bottle and a can of Pepsi Max with me but found I barely drank from my bottle as I was totally immersed in the film. There was barely a sound in the cinema as everyone was the same as me . . . I felt that any movement could change the film as it was so real. I think Scorsese cast this film beautifully and directed it with all the experience of his age. . . and created a masterpiece.
I will almost certainly see this film again after I do some research about how the Jesuits and other missionaries fared in Japan.

I would advise you to also research how Christians treated the natives of countries they tried to convert which will give you insight into why the Japanese treated Christians so badly. Politics as usual plays a huge part.

I was lucky to chat to someone after the film and it put it into perspective so much so, that I too hope to find three hours to rewatch it.

This is clearly a deeply personal film for Scorcese.

The use of silence is fascinating - such a contrast with the usual incessant intrusive soundtracks that pervade so many films these days.

Having recently seen the re-issue of Ran, it was interesting how the shooting/editing in Silence often seemed far more like a classic Japanese film than something coming out of Hollywood.

I absolutely agree, The Sparrow . . .the motives of missionaries and those colonising countries did not always have the best intentions.

I'd have happily stood on a chocolate Jesus to get out 40 minutes earlier but then scenes of captivity and torture aren't supposed to be enjoyed.

If you go in expecting The Last Samurai-tan you'll be disappointed but it you're open to a challenging, fresh perspective on faith that doesn't provide all of the answers then it's a compelling, worthy movie that actually has something to say (unlike pretty much everything else this year).

I particularly wanted to see this film as Liam Neeson was being promoted to the point were people were saying he might win an Oscar. In reality he's only appears in this 3 hour film for about 10 minutes so I was pretty disappointed with the lack of air time, and more so with the misleading, shameless marketing.

Overall I thought the film was extremely boring. I kept waiting for something substantial to happen to spark my interest but nothing really did. It was interesting that the whole film seems like Scorsese is debating Christianity, how it is perceived, the existence of God etc, but it would have interested me more if they showed what happened prior to the priests being persecuted, how the Church infiltrated and enforced the religion on Japan and the consequences due to this. To me it feels like the story is only half told.
