Silence

#1 Post by ploggit » Tue Jan 03, 2017 11:01 am

I have nothing to say about this except that it was utterly, absolutely, interminably boring. In the true spirit of the film, it felt positively penitential. There are better things to do with your time. Roll on the positive reviews....

Fabulous film although it should have been a little shorter. It gave me plenty to ponder. Terrific performances by Andrew Garfield.

Saw this on New Year's Day.
A stunning exploration of faith, it tells the story of two 17th century Portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to find their mentor who has apparently committed apostasy after being tortured. There they find the remaining native Christians have to hide their faith for fear of prosecution and torture.
Lacking the excess of Scorsese's previous film The Wolf on Wall Street, this is a more austere and sombre project but one told with far more conviction.
Strikingly shot and directed, it's not always an easy watch as the camera doesn't shy away from the lengths the Japanese would go to force Christians to denounce their faith but it's an essential and powerful film all the same.
Andrew Garfield is exceptional in the lead role with excellent support from Adam Driver as his fellow priest, Liam Neeson as the missing mentor, Tadanobu Asano as an interpreter, Issey Ogaya as the Inquisitor and Tetsuo the Iron Man director Shinya Tsukamoto as a Christian villager.
It's possibly worth pointing out that those drawn to the film by the presence of Liam Neeson should know that, after a brief appearance at the beginning, it's over two hours before he makes another appearance. His prominence on the film's poster is a little misleading.
That aside, Silence is an exceptional piece of work from a 74 year old filmmaker who shows no signs of slowing down. A powerful and persuasive film that you don't have to be religious to appreciate.

It seems one either loves it or hates it so I will go and see it next Tuesday at the Rio. Thanks for the review McG.

I found Silence to be one of the most intense films I have ever watched. I knew in advance it was going to be a long film so did take a small bottle and a can of Pepsi Max with me but found I barely drank from my bottle as I was totally immersed in the film. There was barely a sound in the cinema as everyone was the same as me . . . I felt that any movement could change the film as it was so real. I think Scorsese cast this film beautifully and directed it with all the experience of his age. . . and created a masterpiece.
I will almost certainly see this film again after I do some research about how the Jesuits and other missionaries fared in Japan.
