Lego Batman Movie

There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker's hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

A hundred mile an hour movie overflowing with ideas and laughs. It simultaneously mocks the ridiculousness/seriousness of the Batman legend whilst also staying true to the spirit of the characters.

If it lacks the novelty of The Lego Movie and the jokes are slightly more hit and miss, The Lego Batman Movie has more than enough fun and energy to compensate, with its relentless scattergun approach ensuring that for every gag that doesn't land there's plenty more that do. Plus there's enough detail whizzing by in the background that you'll still probably want a second viewing to try and catch it all.
It's gleeful mining and gentle fun-poking of the previous screen incarnations of the Dark Knight is particularly delightful with special loving attention pa*d to the camp Adam West era. Whilst almost no stone is left unturned when it comes to dredging up all the villainy of Batman's past with some other iconic bad guys thrown in for good measure.
Will Arnett's narcissistic and immature loner interpretation of the Caped Crusader is still as enjoyable second time round with the welcome addition of Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes and Jenny Slate as Robin, The Joker, Barbara Gordon, Alfred and Harley Quinn.The amusing subversion of traditional romantic comedy plotting in the relationship between Batman and The Joker (will Batman be able to acknowledge his greatest enemy and finally say 'I hate you'?) is particularly hilarious thanks to Arnett and Galifianakis.
It's this great vocal cast and some busy and incredibly detailed action set pieces that help paper over some of the cracks of an occasionally conventional plot.
Perhaps the lack of Lord and Miller in both a writing and directing capacity also accounts for it not being quite as awesome as the previous movie but that film's animation director and Robot Chicken director/producer Chris McKay and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies/Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith do a solid job of picking up the Danish brick baton.

It's a pity however that some of the inventiveness couldn't have extended to the Lego short that preceded it. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the Ninjago themed exploits of The Master with the fine vocal work of Jackie Chan and Justin Theroux. I just also enjoyed it when it played before Storks last summer. Would a brand new short have been too much to ask for?

A Lego movie without the breadth of ingenuity of its predecessor and it suffers for its narrowness, I'm afraid to say.

Though not close to the inventiveness of the original, and patched over largely with slapstick, is still an ok watch, and will mean a bit more to Batman fans, particuarly the camper versions of the superhero. But its also a lost opportunity to really deliver on the Lego franchise that started so well.

I really dislike that short and as I'd seen it just before a rewatch of Storks the same morning I watched Lego Batman, I was very unhappy to see it again!

and its great and all, and all the lines are pure fire but felt there should of been more DC comic elements

I really enjoyed this movie. The best Batman since the Dark Knight. There are jokes and references every other second and the film was so fun it flew by for me!
I didn't think it did all the Batman villains justice, it would have been nice to see a few be more fleshed out.

Put my review on my blog (thefilm.blog) but I really enjoyed the Lego Batman Movie! The gag rate is in a league of its own which I know some found grating but it kept me happy. The plot meanders a bit but thoroughly enjoyable all the same

saw it in imax, decided to give it another star upgrade for the size and 3D, and I think I fell asleep during one of the best bits when I saw it originally.

4 stars in IMAX 3D, 3.5 in 2D.
